Baking with bran

This maybe a dumb question but I hadn't baked with bran before until this week.
What is the difference between baking with bran, wheat bran and oat bran?
I used wheat bran in a bran muffin recipe -- that called for bran -- and my muffins came out shrunken, shriveled, not as flavorful as I would like.
Did I screw up by using wheat bran when the recipe called for just "bran?" What type of bran is good to bake bran muffins?
Yeah, do pre-soak, otherwise your finished product can be a little "heavy" or get lumpy.
I'm tired...I read the topic as "Baking with Brain".
I guess that's what vegans do, tho, isn't it? Use their brains when they bake!
Thank you mdvegan and yabbitgirl. I didn't know that. No pre-soaking mentioned in the recipe I used. I will try that next time.
I learn so much from this board and am so happy people here are so responsive and helpful. :)
