Wonderful or a waste of money?
Posted by Fee on Sep 07, 2007 · Member since Aug 2007 · 499 posts
mmmm I love them! Or at least I used to, haven't seen one in a while. My mom used her first one into oblivion and then was forced to retire the second when we all got tired of bread. She loved the fact that it was SO easy and it was really homemade and tasted that way, we literally came home from school to freshly baked bread every single day. Just beware that it can lead to obsession and others requesting that you stop making so much god d***ed bread

OK, that is funny! A store I frequent has one on sale and I have often thought about making home made bread.
I have enough funny money from that store that it would only cost about $35.00.
I also put good quality bread in my pet's home cooked food. I was thinking I could make nutritious bread without any preservatives so we would all benefit. Four kitties, one dog and me! :)
I love spending my funny money on things I don't necessarily need but would like. That is how I got my crock pot and rice cooker.
Thanks for your input!

I looove my bread machine. I try to test out a new loaf every few days. I've gotten hooked on pumperknickle the past few times. It really just makes life easier..it can be a pain to make bread the traditional way when I'm the only one that will be eating it.

I don't use a bread machine, because I like the feeling of getting my hands into that dough and kneading!

I lovelovelovelovelove my bread machine! :D I don't actually use it as much as I'd like to, though now that fall is coming, I think I'll be using it more often! I go in spurts of using it a couple times a week, and then I kind of forget about it for awhile...
Anyway, it is a great, economical way to make delicious bread! I got mine at a garage sale (brand new!) for $20, I think! And it's SO EASY, too! I love throwing all the ingredients in mine, setting the timer, and then waking up to the smell of freshly-baked bread! Yum! I think I'll set this up tonight! :) You inspired me!

About how much should I pay for one? I'm thinking of getting one.

They range from $40 to $200 online. My mom's first one was $100. So if you find some kind of sale for under $40, I'd say give it a go....even if it breaks after 10 uses, you get your money's worth in the joy of looking through a tiny window to see bread make itself

My mother had a breadmaker and used it often, for the first month or so. Now it sits in the basement. True it was easy to make bread and it always smelled wonderful but we found it went stale very quickly and often went to waste before a loaf was finished. However, that's just us. If you find one cheap I say give it a try and see how you like it. You can always sell it used if you end up not wanting it anymore.

As someone who bakes a lot and who has read many bread baking books ... I'm voting "waste of money." Or rather, if you're not too picky or are a casual baker - then they're probably fine.
If you're like me, and very picky about how the bread turns out, how the crust (most especially) turns out, and you like to experiment with kneading, folding, rising, temperature, timing, etc. ... then a breadmaker will only get in the way of desired results.
It's why the best professional bread bakers still use their hands and ovens. You can't beat that oven baked taste, that crusty bread, that handmade goodness ... mmmmmmmmm.
But, as I said, I adore baking, kneading, the smell of yeast, the bread in the oven - the whole process. It actually turns me on, lol. (Yes, I'm weird.) So, for me, it's a waste of money.

it does not have to be a waste of money...here's why:
I have a bread machine that I now use all the time. My Mom had purchased it for me years and years ago and I used it once when I first got it, then put it back in the box and basically let it join me on each move I made. I used to just store it with all the other boxes I have of stuff I never use. About a year ago...I discovered it again.
I too love to bake from scratch, and get my "hands dirty" in the kneading process. But... there are times I just don't have the time or patience to do it....so I let the bread machine do all the mixing and kneading for me. I then take the dough out when it's ready to bake, shape it, and bake it in my convection oven. Best of both worlds. ;)

Well, I bought the breadmaker yesterday and returned it today. While I am renovating and tending to Cali, I really don't have time to use it. Money is scarce right now too.
Then I emailed my sister and told her to add it to my Christmas list. My dad usually gets my sister to buy for me and I buy for her from him.
I told her about the sale so if either of them want to give it to me, my sister can buy it this week.
I am also worried about the bread not staying fresh long. A friend of mine had one years ago and although they loved the bread, he said it went bad quickly.
Cali gets two slices a day and each of the three cat bowls get a slice (four cats share 3 bowls). If I ate two slices, that would be 7 slices a day. How long does it stay fresh as it has no preservatives in it. At least two days in the fridge?
Does anyone add flax seeds to theirs? Do you add the seeds or grind the flax?
If it is on my Christmas list, I would be very surprised if I didn't get it because my dad hates shopping so will want my sister to go and buy it.
Instead of the breadmaker, I used my $33.00 of Crappy Tire money to buy a BBQ. Earlier in the season I bought the tank, the tools and a mat to go under it. All on sale. As summer is nearly over, the BBQ was on sale for $99.99 from $199.99. With my $33.00 funny money, it cost $66.99.
It has one of the features I really wanted. Cast Iron Grills. I have a large covered balcony so can BBQ year round so it will start getting use soon. I just have to build it! :-(
OK, will make my BF help build it unless he wants to put it together on his own! ;D

I had considered buying a bread machine, but I think I'll try things old school. baking my own bread is a real goal of mine. I would be the ultimate domestic diva/baking goddess. I tried the no knead wheat bread recipe here on vegweb, but didn't use sugar to activate the yeast, so it didn't rise. I know better for next time.
my grandmother used to make a mean loaf of bread. she lives too far away to teach me. :( but I can figure it out on my own!
what's the best bread recipe you've all used?

Well, something Celtkat discovered is that the Maple Wheat Roll recipe from this site (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=5684 ) makes a wicked loaf of bread. On her recommendation, I made one, too, and it makes a huge loaf that is light (for having that much whole wheat flour in it) and great for sandwiches. :D 8)

When I make bread I will slice the whole loaf, freeze half of it and keep half of it out. Then just pull out the frozen half when you need it. It's perfect :)

I'm not sure if it's sacrilegious to post a recipe from another cooking website on here ;), but this is by farthe best bread I have ever made:
(Even for people that don't have a bread machine, there are a couple of people who reviewed the recipe & said they made it by hand & it turned out great!) Yum! I am so in the mood for this now! :D
