Elementary school snacks?
Though my school I'm in a character education program, where once a month I go to an elementary school and teach 3rd graders about character. It's always been customry to bring snacks to these lessons. This is my first year doing this, and I have no idea what to bring. Most people bring these high sugar snacks- candies and cookies. I don't want to do that because it's not fair that I'm there for one hour and leave the kids on a sugar high. Plus it's just not healthy. I have no way to contact the teacher about possible food allergies or objections to bringing snacks in the first place. Pretty much I feel stuck. I don't actually know what third graders like.
And then there's the fact I'm a bit nervous about that whole teaching little kids thing. :-\
Help?
Try some baby carrots and halved strawberries. Or grapes (washed and dried) mixed with a few almonds. Or apple slices in a cinnamon and agave nectar glaze. Just put them in some mini ziplock bags and they'd make excellent treats. :)
Kids like things in packages--fun to open, I suppose :)
You could make little baggies with a variety of things in them--some dried fruit (apples, raisins, and cranberries perhaps?) or some all-natural animal or graham crackers? Look in the bulk bins at a health food store and see what kinds of fun finger-foods kids would like.
If people are bringing candies and cookies, I wouldn't worry too much about the allergy thing (maybe just avoid nuts to be safe).
And don't worry too much about the teaching thing--kids in 3rd grade just think it's cool that there is someone different in their classroom and a "big kid" is even cooler :) They will love you--and their parents will love you for bringing healthy snacks!
I would definitely go with sliced fruit. You could even freeze some grapes in baggies overnite and then bring them in the next day. THey are great like that! Yes, the kids will love you. I teach elementary and they are always welcoming to guests. You could also bake some mini muffins....if they got 2 each I think that would be enough.
in elementay school i was a die hard carrots and peanut butter lover*!~
oo or even cellery, granola...**!~ ::)
does this have to be vegan?
i'm thinking goldfish. kids love those and they are healthy.
and animal crackers are a good idea too.
Thanks guys! Now I'm thinking little bags of a trail-mix type thing.
I just learned that the lesson is going to be based on a Pocahontas song.
pretzels, puddings, nuts (I know but still make no one is allergic), crackers filled with peanut butter (they are already made), veggie yogurt, veggie brownies.
