I'm curious about the * and the '

How come so many words on VegWeb are commonly modified-- like veg*n and mash'ed? Are we trying to prevent googlitude and avoid flame-war-loving visitors? I missed whatever conversation it springs from, but I don't want to be a bad citizen of the VegWeb community... what should I be doing? ;)
I was going to ask this same question (in regards to the *) the other day but forgot. It is not just VegWeb, I see veg*n everywhere (other boards, blogs...), not just here. So I'd also like an answer to this. :)

Aha! Thank you-- that makes great sense.
When we moved the recipes from a file structure into its current database form, we goofed, twice. The first goof was that all apostrophes were removed in all of the recipes during the import. The second goof was in trying to replace all occurrences of the word "shed" with "she'd" to "repair" the problem. Thus, mashed became mashe'd. We should have changed " shed " to " she'd " (note the spaces). I've just replaced all of occurrences of mashe'd with mashed. Hopefully, this hasn't caused any further problems.

Oh! Thanks, Yvette-- I certainly didn't mean to call attention to a find & replace error; I was just wondering if there was a reason to replicate what I was seeing.
And might I say, wow! You're sure Johnny-on-the-spot and attentive!
No probem. Thanks for mentioning it.. There are likely several more words that need to be fixed yet.

LOL I never even noticed the apostrophes! Actually Mashe'd Potatos sound yummier to me! ;)
I like using the "veg*n" it seems more inclusive. And I (like many others) have been both.
The asterisk (*) is a wildcard character (not a bleep-out;)) that stands for any combination of letters.
