Non cutting recipes?

Sooo...I was making a vegan version of this grrreat veggie lasagna http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Sauceless-Garden-Lasagna/Detail.aspx and rather than chopping, decided to practice chiffonading my basil. I was sooo enthusiastic about it that I chopped off a chunk of my finger (I have a pic, but thought it might be too gross to post) and had to go to the ER and have spent the last week with a bulky bandage on my hand.  :'(

Enough of the sob story, now I'm a big dork and too scared to cut veggies (although a friend pointed out that I already took off the part that has high odds of getting cut. I'm sure I'll get back into the swing of things, but any recipes for things that don't require cutting anything? I've been doing lots of baking this week..... :-\

Incidentally, the recipe was for a sauceless lasagna, but now I'm calling it Fingerless Lasagna.  :D

Try roasting or broiling whole veggies...you don't have to cut them up until they're done and soft, and you can do it with a nice, round spoon.  ;)
Lots of baked potatoes and canned veg in your future. Also frozen veg that comes pre-sliced.

ahhhhh dinkfeet, i am so sorry to hear of your misfortunes!! now you will have the rest of your life to make up cool stories about how you lost the end of your finger.  my personal favorites include:
baby shark attack
sword fight
working for the Yakuza
rabid kitten bite...

how do you feel about food proccessors? and trader joes?
i'm not a big fan of trader joes produce most of the time, but they do have a great selection fo packaged, pre-cut veggies that are great for salads, sammies, and stir-fries.  you could also invite a friend over for dinner and ask them to help with the cutting.
hope you're feeling better soon!

Hi Lime Green, so far my finger stories included a rabid wildebeast in the backyard and getting between my office mate and her Mountain Dew :)

Trader Joe's is a bit of a hike, but I could get expensive pre-cut veggies from the salad bar, and fro veggies - good idea!

Yabbitgirl - I had baked sweet potatoes Tuesday, but it's a bit hot & summery here....I suppose I could try that darned microwave-lookin' thing that sits above the stove  ;)

I have totally doen the same thing, twice, chopping cilantro... BTW my finger "grew back" as opposed to leaving a weird hole...

Youj ust have to get right back on the horse as they say...  You should use a finger guard http://www.kitchenkapers.com/finger-guard.html until you're comfortable (or just ALWAYS remember to make your bear claw when chopping!)

No way?! My finger will be like a lizard tail! I was brought to the brink of tears when "Now I'll never be a hand model!" flashed through my mind.  :'(  But I'm relieved to know it will grow back, if I get a cool scar, I'll post a pic of that too!

I typically bear claw, but chiffonading is so darn hard - you have to sminch all the leaves together (yes, that's the technical term).

Aww, your finger doesn't look too bad. I was picturing, like, a half cut finger, almost right down to the bone (sick, aren't I? :P)

It's true. It's not super bad, but it makes me afraid of knives, blech. Like when you almost get hit by someone running a red light so you always slow down at intersections :(

Yeah, I don't blame you. I know what you mean.

Awww dinkfeet, I understand your fear. I fell a couple of years ago, tripped on something and fell right on my knee on our marble floor. I was convinced I had broken my leg, but I hadn't! We didn't have any ice (it was January!) so I just grabbed something out of the freezer to put on it. It didn't swell up or even bruise very much, so I didn't go to the hosp. but for months after that, if I would bump it just right...OWWWWW!
I thought about getting a kneeguard in a sports store because I became obsessed with the fear that I would fall again and really break it that time. But I never have, thank goodness. That was 2+ yrs ago (I'm not good with time, at least that) and it never hurts anymore.

salads are good - green salads (i never cut them, just tear them), bean salads, or pasta salads.

Salads! Now why didn't I think of that?

Hi All, so here's an update on the chiffonade incident:

My finger has a funky scar now, and I can type at work, but when I tried to cut up some zucchini for curry the other night, I wanted to cry because I was scared and in my mind's eye, I just kept seeing the blade slice through my flesh....gross  :P

I had tons of roasted veggies, did craploads of baking, and definitely hit the frozen aisle for pre-cut veggies (thanks everyone!) I'm going to make myself cut a couple of cucumbers tonight, 'cause those are easy. Thanks for all the encouragement, here's an updated (still fuzzy - need to purchase camera) pic:

It looks really good now!  It should heal and look just fine in a few months.  Or more depending on how fast your nail grows out!  I have twice now hacked into my index fingertip so I understand your fear.  Luckily the knife was stopped by the nail, straight cut down the side, and I missed cutting off the whole tip!

That finger guard linked on page 1 looks great.  Get something like that to keep you in the proper 'knuckles on the knife flat' position and if you want to cut up herbs again, use kitchen sheers!  Good luck.  :D
