Rant- Why when you eat out do salads have more than one type of cheese on them?!

This afternoon my friend and I went to lunch.  I ordered a leafy green salad without the blue cheese because the menu stated there was blue cheese.  A little while later I get my salad and it has a ton of shredded cheese on it?!  Not blue cheese but some other kind of cheese.  Faced with the decision of having to either argue with the waitteress about my eating preferences or just picking the cheese off (it was a thick shredded cheese) I chose to pick the cheese off because we were a little pressed for time.

About ten minutes into picking the cheese off and throwing it onto my friend's plate the waittress comes up and asks if there is a problem with the salad.  My friend pipes up and says, "Don't worry he's vegan".  The waittress responds with a dirty look which I question if there is anything wrong with that.  She responds that we obviously there is nothing wrong with being vegan except that it is unhealthy, and that god put animals here for us to eat.  Summing her argument up as a difference of morals.  Finally, she adds that "mild doesn't kill animals".  By now I am visibly upset.  She walked away and only returned to put the bill on the table.  Needless to say she did not get a tip for my meal.

When we got to the car in the parking lot I let loose on my friend about how wrong this waittress was about everything.  And went on the whole rant about veal and dairy cows and whatnot.  And as I write this I can smell my roommates cooking downstairs some kind of meat based product, which is making me even more upset about the ignorance of a majority of the world for their lives and animal lives.  It has just not been a vegan friendly day for me.  At least tomorrow is vegan cooking day for me!  Sorry, I was/still am a little upset over this whole experience and felt the need to rant!

Wow.  "God put animals here for us to eat."  Apparently this waitress and God are good buddies...

Her ignorance (and that of the general public) is very frustrating!  Especially when everyone dismisses vegan diets as unhealthy, period, end of story.  If only they knew about the 3342343232 ways in which proper vegan diets are the best thing you can do for your health!  Not to mention the whole "if I drink milk/eat cheese, I am not really hurting the cow" mentality.  Don't even get me started.  You can't really blame people for their ignorance when they are bombarded with "Got Milk" ads days in and day out, I suppose.  All this reminds me of those TV ads with the talking cows where they say "Good cheese comes from happy cows!"  Uh huh.  >:(

ugh, foofie it sounds like you had an awful day.  sometimes the best hting you can do is take a long walk and force yourself to think positively.

That sucks man.  You handled the waitress a lot more tactfully than I probably would have!

How rude of the waitress!  I think sometimes, when I tell people I am a vegetarian (aspriring vegan though) they take it as an attack on their eating habits!  They get defensive and try to argue with me when all I said was "I am a vegetarian."  Foofie, this waitress obviously has some issues and this attack was in no way justified!  You were very tactful!

And in respone to your original question "Why when you eat out do salads have more than one type of cheese on them?!"  Answer:  because sometimes, it is the only way you can get omnis to eat their veggies!!!  ;D

i cant believe you held your tongue so well, foofie! i bet she gave you her opinion on the health merits of a vegan diet right before she went out fot a smoke break.  ;D

Baypuppy, you posted at the same time I did, but since I already typed it out I'm going to send it.  :)That waitress obviously has some issues!  I probably would have spoken to the manager because in no way should a waitress put down a customers food preference.  I would still call them if I were you because the more I think about the more ignorant I find the whole situation

Seriously -- I would call and report that to the manager, especially if it was a nicer restaurant. That's completely unacceptable. Never mind whether being vegan is right or wrong, healthy or unhealthy. She's there to provide a service, and instead of doing that, she was utterly disrespectful, and failed to do what she was asked to do (serve the salad without cheese). Food service, or any kind of service industry is not for her. Please call and complain. Be polite, but firm. If the manager has his/her head screwed on correctly, that waitress will be sent packing at the end of the week, or at the very least get a strong lecture. Odds are, though, that this isn't the first time she's effed up royally with a customer.

It's so weird to do that, from the point of view of a foodservice worker. I mean, here you are, serving tons of people a day, every body's got their weird pickiness, things they don't like, things they do, etc, and here comes one vegan and you tell them about God and health and such?

Man. While working at Starbucks, I've never stopped and said to one of my sugar-free-vanilla non-fat no-foam latte customers, "you know, God put carbs on this planet for you to eat. It's unhealthy to not eat sugar." Even if someone's got some weird idea about foam containing fat or decaf being fattening, I wouldn't correct them unless they were asking me if it were true or something.

... Maybe she's new?

uh, what place was that so i can remember not to eat there.

I don't even remember what the name of the place was.  My friend said he needed to go to albany.  Viewing the opportunity as an escape from doing thesis work I agreed to go.  Unfortunately, we ended up at crossgates.  He wanted to get food/a beer so being a little hungry myself decided that a simple salad would be a safe choice....apparently I was wrong.

Ive heard some salads come with bacon bits. (And remember foofie I'm not saying this is your fault I'm saying some restauraters don't understand the meaning of the word salad).

You shoulda said," Thanks for your opinion. And please get me another salad".

(What a conditioned opinion that was to).

How insensitive!!!!  I agree you should call the manager and report the waitress.  Suppose you, like me, were severely lactose intolerant????  Or allergic to dairy!!!  The restaurant menu or the wait staff should have been more clear as to what was on the salad.  This is a primary reason I no longer eat out.

You might've gotten the wrong order maybe.

or maybe cams and i can travel to your neck of the CR and we can go have a big vegan party at the place...  8)

Hell yeah! It'll be a veg-IN, (like a nurse-IN for stupid places that have breastfeeding issues) everyone can go and order dishes with "hold the ___" (I suggest saying "hold the death" or "hold the cancer feeding items")

:'( :'( okay, that's really sad. i'm guessing it was Ruby Tuesdays or the pizza place (Unos?).  DR and I go to Unos and they have been really nice about my vegan needs in case you even venture to the mall again. the flatbread pizza is vegan if you hold the cheese (the pan pizza crust has dairy in it  ???). i usually get the "build your own" and they have let me sub the cheese for another veggie topping.  8)

Yeah, for a chain restaurant, Uno's is good about that. I had an awesome pizza there sans cheese--our waiter just let me pile on the veggies since I wasn't getting meat or cheese. Needless to say, he got a great tip  8)
