Is sugar vegan?

I just read somewhere that they colour in white or brown with bone grindings? Is that right?
If so, I would never have known. Anyone got a good links on foods that are not vegan or vegetarian that aren't blatantly obvious. And any recommendations for substitutes?
Sugar? I would never have guessed
Some sugar is refined with bone char. Brown sugar is white sugar with molasses added to it. Sugar not refined with bone char is usually not as bright white as refined. There are different ways to make sugar and using bone char is not a given...so, sugar can be vegan or not. Confused enough? The Whole Foods website has a nice "tutorial" about the various kinds of sugars. You might take a look...
Bone char is used in the process of refining sugar. It's not in the final product.
So, what's the story behind your handle?
You will have to decide for yourself whether or not you consider this a reason to abstain from refined sugar. Here is some food for thought: http://www.veganoutreach.org/advocacy/path.html#veganexample

Interesting article.

What is a handle?
There is also natural brown sugar. Not white sugar plus molasses. But, just plain old natural brown sugar. Nothing added to it - just comes off the cane that way.
I don't eat processed sugar anyway - regardless of its vegan status. It doesn't have any nutrition in it, and actually takes nutrition away from you. It's like negative nutrition!
For the sake of argument, I'd have to say sugar is vegan. It contains no animals or animal by products. Plus, in terms of global impact, while bone char is used in the process ... I don't really think avoiding sugar is going to impact the meat industry in any way, shape, or form.
the name one uses on a site-- your handle is "glen ellyn service crew" !!
Ahh I see. OK long story very short. I grew up in England and spent most of my teens and twenties following my football team around the country and across Europe when we were allowed back in after the ban in the late 80's and early 90's. Like most English football teams the team I followed had a "firm" of hardcore supporters who were up for a row, though I was not part of the firm I often travelled to away games with them and we all drank in the same pubs so everyone knew everyone. I gave all that up to move to the US and marry my wife, she did attend a few games when she came over to visit but never really knew me back then. Anyhow my wife and most of my family always tease me about the turnaround in my lifestyle that I have today. To which I reply:
"I'm still hardcore I'm the top boy in the Glen Ellyn Service Crew"
Service Crew being the name of my firm (of 1, well my dog too I guess because he is always up for a row being a terrier) and Glen Ellyn being my place of residence right now.
To be honest it is quite a turnaround, sometimes I can't quite believe it myself. In fact I watched my team on Saturday on Fox Soccer Channel on the opening day of the season and it really did bring back some great memories.
