Vegan Margarine

Can anyone please suggest some good vegan margarines. Also has anyone heard of verve margarine? Is it vegan? Thanks

Earth Balance and Earth Balance Soy.

I use Earth Balance. It's amazing! The only bad thing is that is doesn't spread AT ALL straight from the fridge, so sometimes it needs to be softened a bit on the countertop or in the microwave.

I like Earth Balance Whipped (in the green container) better for spreading on bread, etc. And regular Earth balance (in the yellow container) for baking & cooking. It works so well! Much healthier than old cow-derived butter, too! :)

Also, Earth Balance makes a wonderful non-hydrogenated vegan shortening if you ever need that for baking or anything!

Earth Balance is available at many HFS and even some "regular" supermarkets.

Vegan, non-hydrogenated, no trans fats.  Tasty too!

i was gonna suggest this one as well.  its a lot easier to find in almost any grocery store and tastes great!! make sure to get the "light" thats the only vegan kind.

yeah - I've been wondering about vegan margarine. I haven't seen smart balance light in the past few days, I've been looking for it. I was just at my HFS this afternoon and they didn't have it - I think they were out of stock of a bunch of things today though. I need something light for cooking and baking...

man, it's so frustrating that EVERY kind of margarine has whey, or something else, in it. are animal ingredients really that necessary? jeez...

I thought you were referring to Earth Balance at first, and you made me panic for a moment! :P I've never bought Smart Balance, but it appears that every Earth Balance type of margarine is 100% vegan! :)

Smart Balance LIGHT ;)
and earth balance and smart balance are the same company BTW

i use soy garden  - it's made by the earth balance company.  good & buttery tasting.. but not as salty as regular butter.

Earth Balance.  But I can only find it at the HFS, so I'll also use Smart Balance Light or Blue Bonnet Light, depending on what the grocery store bothers to have available.

i'm pretty sure that i've seen verve margarine in the fortinos grocery store near me (in canada). i'm 99% sure that thats what i saw, and if so, its not vegan- i recall it having whey, and fish derivatives in it.

if that is the case, you might be stuck with earth balance... i say stuck... but it really is the most delicious stuff i've ever tasted- like butter, but better.

see here for info: http://www.earthbalance.net/product.html

are you in canada? if so, i know that earth balance is available in eastern canada- i've seen it in both ontario, and newbrunswick, in healthfood stores, and even in a sobeys once!

I'd never heard of verve, so I thought I'd look it up. It looks like the omega 3s are from flax oil, so it likely doesn't have fish derivatives in it; I don't know about whey, though, since I couldn't find an ingredients list. However, here's their website if you want to contact the company about its vegan-ness:

i think it was D3 fortification that put the fish idea in my brain. i tend to scan ingredients and go 'dairy, fish, egg' and remember that, instead of exactly what is was that wasn't vegan, when i check stuff out (i know d3 isn't neccesarily fish based though- could be sheeps wool, or synthetic in origin).

if i pop into fortinos again in the near future i'll check it out though.

i think its such a pain when stores and sites online don't list product ingredients. it drives me mental.

I remember seeing verve in a grocery store and checking out the label. I think it has whey, but don't hold me to that - I might be remembering wrong.

I found a margarine made from rice (Galaxy foods I think) but it has whey or casein in it! What's the point of rice margarine with whey? crazy manufacturers...

those products (there are loads like that, including lots of soya cheeses) are designed for lactose intollerant people.

the manufacturers could expend their consumer base by making it vegan friendly...  but their return consumers might drop- because the casein serves a purpose by improving consistancy and making the cheese more melty.

non-melty cheese with a weird consistancy just doesn't sell as well, i guess- and the lactose intollerant folks outnumber the vegan folks.

blue bonnet light

Vitamin D is animal derived in this.

went to fortinos today.

took digital photo of verve margarine ingredients label like a right proper weirdo. :D

ingredients are:

canola oil, water, modified palm oil, flax oil (5%), sunflower oil, soybean oil, palm oil, sea salt, whey powder, soy lethicin, monoglycerides, natural flavour, potassium sorbate, citric acid, vitamin a, vitamin d, alpa-tocopherol.

its not vegan due to the whey powder. i'd also be concerned about the sources of the vitamins,  natural flavour and monogylcerides.
