Whats your least fav. veggie/fruit

i HATE beets! There so healthy for you though  :-\ . I try to cut them up real small but its always a struggle (I eat them raw).

Just curious ...do you have any veggie that no matter what its hard to eat? What about fruit.

Least Favorite

Veggie-Beets
Fruit- Oranges (I LOVE clementines though)

I love all fruits and veggies when prepared well.

I don't care for canned peas, corn, or carrots (bad school lunch memories, I suspect) - but love them fresh or frozen.

And, I am allergic to mangoes :-\  - it's a common allergen, since they are a cousin to poison ivy.

I would like to thank those who listed okra.  I've been gearing up to experiment with all of the veggies I haven't tried yet, but now I think I'll pass on okra (sorry hard working okra farmers).

I forgot potatoes as my least-favorite vegetable.  I discovered the trend that I'm anti potatoes, rice, pasta, and all other whitish starchy foods.

I honestly don't think that I have encountered a vegetable or fruit that I don't like as long as it is not over cooked or canned and mushy.

I love em all. okra, cilantro, olives, brussel sprouts, mushrooms and beets.

Even as a child I was a veggie lover.

Don't let me stop you from trying okra!  Many people love it.  If there's one thing this thread proves, it's that one man's meat (if you'll pardon the expression  ::)) is another man's poison.  Many of the foods that people have listed here are things that I adore (mushrooms, tomatoes, olives...).  There's no accounting for taste!

I do like okra, any way but straight boiled but I'm going to try fixing it this way:  http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2006/08/roasted-okra.html
and maybe I'll get my DH to try it.  He hates okra too.

There aren't any common fruits I don't like.  DH and I have tried some weird fruits from the local asian grocery store that weren't so great but I can't remember what all they were.

As for vegetables...  I can only stand celery if it is cooked soft.  I can only stand onions if they are soft, well cooked, and either very small or near liquified.  (Exception - french onion soup)  I don't like white mushrooms, but I like enoki and woodear and, in small amount, shitake.

I don't know what you want to count olives as but I can't stand them.  Never liked them, but one summer when I was a teenager I was working on a dinner boat in Pittsburgh and had to serve meals in the buffet line and I had some fish and olive dish...  some guy walked through and said "Mmmmm, fish and fish eyes!"  So now I always think of fish eyes  when I think of olives.

But the hands down vegetable i cannot stand in any way, shape, or form is bell peppers.  Red or green.  Or yellow.  Can't stand the taste, the smell...  I made a huge batch of TVP sloppy joes once in an attempt to MAKE myself like red peppers - I ate a little ever day in an attempt to "immunize" myself.  By day 3 or 4, I was wretching as I ate and I had to give up.  I have never tried again.

And bell peppers are EVERYWHERE and people who like them say "You can hardly taste them."  But if you hate them, you can't miss them.

I mentioned that I didn't like watermelon. But reading all the recent posts reminded me that I don't like melon of any kind, now that I think about it. And grapefruit. Ick.

I also forgot to mention Peas as my least fav veggie. Maybe it's the texture of cooked peas that I don't like (never tried them raw). I do love  broccoli but it doesn't like me. I get really bad ... um, gas from it.

Thanks for the encouragement!  :)

Okra is back on the list.  BV, I tried haggis once, so what am I worried about?

If I ever see okra (I don't remember ever having seen it in grocery stores), I'm going to try that recipe, TinTexas.

It's easy to overlook because most grocery stores don't stock nearly as much of it as they do the more common stuff.  I'm not sure that what I have in the fridge wasn't grown in Chile because it's not in season in the US yet.  It's a summertime veg and probably more common in the South than California or Yankee land.

For anyone who might be on the fence about okra (I was at one point) or who hasn't tried it before, this is a very simply recipe, and very tasty:

Everyone in my family loves melons so much it never occurred to me that there were so many folks out there who don't like them. Learn something new every day.

I have just recently become a fan of brussels sprouts. My husband likes them in any way, shape, or form but I always thought they were too bitter. He told me that I'd probably like them if I bought very small ones. And I did! They are very tender and not bitter, which was my complaint all these years. I was actually made brave enough to try them when I read on Vegan Lunch Box that they are the Shmoo's favorite veggie. I figured if a 6-7-year-old boy liked them, I might need to give them a second chance. ;)

Being from the South, fried okra is an absolute favorite of mine. However, ingesting the (delicious--really!) batter and grease gives me major guilt, so I occasionally have "blackened" okra and it is not slimy at all. I just put sliced okra (if you don't want to deal with the slime when cutting, just use frozen) in a pan sprayed with a little olive oil and keep stirring until they have blackened edges and look dry. I expect the flavor is similiar to the roasted okra recipe from fatfreevegan. I'm definitely going to give that a try.

As for veggies I hate...well, beets aren't high on my tasty list though I can eat them. I'm not crazy about most greens but I do like wilted fresh spinach and kale. There are still many veggies out there that I've yet to try, but I'm hopeful if I get around to them that they won't be on my "hate list."  I don't think there is a fruit I have tasted that I didn't like--yet, anyway.

You can also find pickled okra next to the pickles at the store.  I don't like pickles, because I don't like cucumbers, but I like pickled okra.  I don't put it in anything.  It's nice and crisp from the jar, and I just eat it as a snack.

My mom used to can her own pickled okra.  If you'd like me to get her recipe, let me know.  It's always nice to be able to make something yourself, I think.

I'm always surprised when someone says that they like jicama.  I tried two bites, and threw the rest out.  And I'm a tightwad; I hate wasting food.  But jicama was like eating a raw potato, but worse somehow.  And I am in complete agreement with the earlier comment about papaya.  Papaya is just nasty.  And starfruit.  That's pretty gross, too.

TinTexas, I would LOVE that recipe.  We hardly ever buy pickled okra because it's usually a bit more than we like to spend.

I would love that recipe, also.  I learned how to preserve food last year but I haven't pickled anything since we made sauerkraut in class.

Since Okra is so controversial, let me suggest making it my favorite, completely non-slimy, way:
Buy whole, fresh okra.
Wash them, then pat them dry with a paper towel until there is no moisture on them, at all (moisture+okra=slime)
cut off the very tips of the stems, but don't cut into the veggie (you should see flesh at the end, not seeds)
Put about 2 teaspoons of oil in a non-stick skillet, and saute the okra over medium high heat until they begin to get the tiniest bit of brown. Alternately, they can be grilled
Salt and serve.
Okra is totally yummy this way - kinda reminds me of asparagus.

the only way i've tried and enjoyed okra is when it's deep fried or in an indian curry (bindhi masala)
