Food Drives...

We had a food drive at work this week. We got one day of casual dress for every one nonperishable item we brought in. It was a great idea, especially since people tend to donate more during the holidays, and because kids are home for the summer (thus eating one or two extra meals a day). We were told that some of the top items needed were macaroni and cheese, canned tuna fish, and pasta.

These definitely aren't the worst things that a person could eat (and pasta is good for you if you eat whole wheat). And it's better to eat these sorts of things than not eat at all. And it's incredibly awesome that there are compassionate people out there devoting their time to making sure that people who otherwise wouldn't be able to eat are able to. But today I was reminded me what sorts of things that some low income people and people who are "in a rough patch" are eating.

I think I'm going to pick up extra canned beans, brown rice, etc. next time I go grocery shopping and donate to the local food pantry.

Just thought that I would share.
