Carrot and Nothing else cake??

I really want to make this cake for my birthday on Sunday, but I am trying to cut out sugar. 

So if I replace the sugar with maple syrup or brown rice syrup, will I need to make any other modifications to the recipe?

Oh, I will also be using half whole wheat, half white flour. Thanks!

If you go click the above link, which will take you to the recipe and go to page two, someone else has asked the same question and it sounds like a liquid sweetener will work.
