Growing your own veggies?

So I was thinking of starting my own veggie growing patch in my yard. Does anyone else grow their own? Any helpful hint, book recommendations etc.
This will be my first time growing vegetables.
So I was thinking that maybe you live on the other side of the world and it was spring there. Then I looked at your profile and realized that you live up the road from me. It's a bit late to start growing most things this year. You might try some lettuces or radishes. Things that have short growing periods. Also this heat wave we're in is also not ideal for starting plants in. You would also be able to start some herbs in pots that could be moved indores when we get our wonderful winters.
Igrew up on an organic farm so I have lots of experience with growing things. Your first year or two I would stick to bought plants. They are much easier than starting with seeds.
Here are a couple of previous threads that might help too.

Thanks for the reply. I was not thinking I was going to plant right now to be honest. More planning for next spring.
This is the perfect time to start thinking about a garden for next year. What is your yard/land situation? How much space do you want to devote? shady/sunny? any fences? I'll try and throw you a few ideas.
