You are here

in terms of restaurant reviews....

what do you think is the most comprehensive site and do you add to it?

i never really cared too much, but lately i have been eating out since i am still living out of a bag and have actually been trying new things around my town which is really fun. i generally use happy cow when i am traveling, but i do find plenty of things that are not listed on there. i was always pretty annoyed that you had to sign up to write reviews or add places (still haven't figured out how), but i finally signed up since i would like to add things that are not on there.
so, tell me what you use and if you are signed up for happy cow and if you like to try to make it better by reviewing and adding things (or other sites if you know of any that are better!)

side note: this morning i was so excited to discover that a restaurant that has a few vegan dishes would make any of the scrambled egg breakfasts vegan with tofu. woo-hoo, i thought, tofu scrambles are awesome! i found a place to get vegan breakfast! rad! then, i get it and it has the tofu in cubes, totally non-flavourful (def not pressed or marinated). they need to get a vegan chef.

I think the happycow site is a pretty good one.  I believe I have left a few reviews there before, but it was a while ago.

eta:  I just saw that you put happycow in your original post. ::) ::)

Although not a veg*n site, I always use Yelp whenever I notice a restaurant I'd like to try or want to search for restaurants (including veg).  It's pretty heavily used here in the SF bay area, but I'm not sure if that's the case for other regions.

i've found that yelp is huge in the bay area, but i was actually just checking out yelp for my region and they didn't even have the best place (IMO)! i told living vegan i would start one for my town.

I signed up for happy cow and wanted to add restaurants to it but they have a desclaimer at the bottom that says only to add restaurants that are primarily vegan or that are don't primarily use animal products and where I live here in Michigan there is not one vegan restaurant, but alot of restaurants that have vegetarian/vegan options.  Like the Indian place I like has a special vegan section on the menu, BUT they also serve a ton of meat Tandori style, not really animal friendly.  So I havn't added any restaurants to it and it only lists health food stores where I live.

i think you should be able to add whatever. i think it helps more than hurts!

i always use vegdining.com when i travel. it seems more organized than happy cow. i think it can be found through the peta website.
bummer about the bland tofu cubes! how anticlimactic!  :P

I had the same thing happen to me this week. I've been on vacation with my family and found this very reasonably priced cafe that had vegan options. I was so excited to see tofu scramble. When my plate came out it was exactly like you said cubed tofu, no flavor whatsoever. I had to add a ton of salt and ketchup. It was pretty disappointing considering I've had some really kick ass tofu scrambles at other restaurants but hey at least they gave it a shot.

Back to the original question...I use happycow also. Yahoo reviews sometimes too.

Dear!,
Let me share my favourite with all of you. It's an Indian Restaurant in San Diego, called Bananaleaf (http://www.bananaleafsd.com/). I'm used to going once a month :)>>>. They offer a wide range of different dishes, so mouthwatering and at a reasonable price. Check'em out.
I believe the best guide will allways be based on personal recommendations

Yelp is HUGE the bay area, but not as big in Nashville.

I use Google Maps.  I type in "vegetarian restaurants, , "  I get a map to the locations and links to reviews.  I find that there are veg places that serve vegan food that don't come up with a "vegan restaurants" search.

(I posted for other people.  I don't suppose you eat out much anymore.)

i used to use google maps. and, though i don't eat out anymore, i do still think a good comprehensive list should exist. one that includes places you can stop in and find vegan options relatively easily.
