You are here

The official, amazing, aimless chitchat thread.

So this is where we go to make small talk that doesn't really fit into other threads.
It's the thread with no attention span!

Frequent, arbitrary changes of topic are encouraged.  In fact, they are mandatory.

So, I was just thinking, wouldn't it be awesome to have the decor in each room of your house be inspired by a food?  Like, I was cutting up eggplant today, making my accidental eggplant chips, and I though, wow, this eggplant looks so pretty against this green plate!  I would love to  have a room inspired entirely by eggplant colors.  And then I thought there could be ones inspired by mangoes and apples and sweet potatoes and pretty much any other pretty food.

Hey, a friend of mine made these really awesome mosaics of all her food pictures based on color.  THIS is what I mean:

So, what was I saying?

So this is what I've done so far today... I watched the first 2 hours of the BBC's Pride and Prejudice (oh Mr. Darcy!), surfed on vegweb a bit, tidied and swept my bedroom, and now I'm working on updating my resume and writing a cover letter for summer jobs. There are a couple of student positions at the local children's museum, and they sound awesome! I really, really want to work there - I love museums, one of my high school friends works at the museum cafe (which mostly organic and has a lot of vegan options!), and it's right downtown (near my yoga studio, the bus station, my mom's office, the bank, a couple of nice cafes and shops...)! I want my application to be perfect.

But I haven't nearly been as productive as you, AC. Impressive!

I have not been keeping up with this thread.  *hangs head in shame*

But my news of the day is... We move into our house June 28th!

Since we are buying my husband's parent's house everything is easy and going quite smoothly.  But I am now freaking out over how to clean, pack and wait for the move in date while surviving in the crappy small condo while the kid is here for her summer break!  If she wasn't going to be here I would just use her room as storage, but I cant.  *panics*

Well, if you dont hear from me, I am stressing out or the boxes ate me.  ;)

Cali!! OMG is that u, from krista's board?? Remember me? what happened to board, when i was gonna log on one day it was...gone!! :'( :o

this just in:

some varieties of choxie dark chocolate (Target) are vegan. I got the Ceylon spice (on clearance). Quality (1-10): 6. Oh well.

The "archer farms"/"market pantry"/whatever it is (Target brand) of garlic focaccia mix is vegan. (instructions are vegan too! hooray for no subs!). And so are some other mixes, like double chocolate cookies and vanilla shortbread. =)

I have a bit of a conundrum, but don't think it's worthy of starting a new thread - so I'll just post it here. I want to start making and eating dinner with my family (we don't eat together, or we sit in front of the TV to eat - how unhealthy), and one of the meals I thought of, which they all would enjoy as a treat, is pancakes. I could make them from scratch, but we have a 5-grain pancake mix in the cupboard (it's been there for a couple of years and hasn't been used up yet).

A couple of problems with this:

1) The pancake mix has whey powder in it. It was bought in bulk and the ingredients and directions taped to the side of the container - and yesterday I ripped off the ingredient list so I couldn't see the words "whey powder" (I was hoping for an out of sight out of mind kind of thing). I don't know... I feel like if I make pancakes and eat them I'll be tainting myself with whey, but that's ridiculous isn't it? It's good to use up non-vegan things, wasting them would be worse. Also, my family hardly ever sits down to eat together, and doing that would be a big deal for me. My family members would also really appreciate it (and wouldn't be able to complain that they can taste the "soy" in everything I make, because there wouldn't be any - erg, that's so frustrating). Shouldn't all that outweigh the whey? It's all in how I view things... right?

2) It's an old mix. Could it have gone bad?

I need some reassurance...  ??? This isn't really a big deal, but it seems like it is to me.

It's 12:58 PM, and I'm eating coconut rice and black beans.

Should I submit my recipe for coconut rice? It's so easy...but it does have more than one ingredient (I think that was bp's requirement for a recipe).

Yes, submit it.  I was looking for the coconut rice recipe on here...but couldn't find it ...ugh...probably because there isn't one....several recipes include instructions on how to make it. But, what the heck, you should submit the "official" coconut rice recipe.

This is good news to hear!  I would never have thought to check those mixes.  I always just assume stuff like that has no chance of being vegan.

I submitted it earlier...but...now I'm feeling pressured. I just called it coconut rice...so I guess it's my "official" coconut rice.....I don't know what I'm trying to say, haha

laurabs-
i would make the pancakes for my family to use it up and make a small batch of pancakes from scratch for myself. this way, i would be participating in the dinner (besides the whole making it part  :D) and using up something so that it doesn't go to waste. better to feed people than to fill up a landfill. i just couldn't knowingly eat something non-veg. gross. and it sounds bad that i would be like 'well, it's not good enough for me, but good enough for them...', but really, they eat that kind of stuff all the time so whatever.

I agree that you could make some for yourself. Any way around it..I don't think you need to eat them (if you fix them or not). Does your family also want to start eating together? If they do..I would think they would know that they will have to be pretty open-minded about it? Of course I don't know your family..but if they want to eat with you..they should be willing to help with the process. If you want to do the pancakes and use up the mix..do that..and then make yourself something else (pancakes or whatever). Maybe this could be the "launching" point..and you can make something that you want to make..another time. I think there are other ways to not waste things..other than having to eat it yourself, but this of course a personal choice for you as well.

I don't feel like I'm making sense this evening..

i had hear this, but all ALL all ALL the choxie i have found has milk stuffs in it. but they have endangered species... soo.... idk?

I swore that they all used to contain milkstuffs, but now a few don't: espresso dark chocolate bar, espresso dark chocolate bite-things, ceylon spice dark chocolate bar, ghana select origin bar, and sao thome select origin bar.

i usually get the endangered species or ritter now that they stock those, too, but i figured i'd try choxie just so i can be confident in that I know what all the vegan chocolate is like... worth a try, but the endangered 70% is still better  ;)b

I  :)>>> This thread!!!

What is focaccia? I think I need to make a trip to Target. Espresso dark chocolate bars sound very good....I hear they have some organic cotton shirts now too....Laura, if it was me I'd make the pancakes & then refill the container with home made vegan pancake mix just to make sure noone replaces it with another nonvegan one. Which reminds me to make up a vegan pancake mix to have laying around the house

I used to work for the NJDEP & it was really busy. I issued permits for water main extensions & the like. But then I started gettting bored with it because it was too repetitive & I ended up doing the work of like 3 people & they wouldn't hire replacements for the people who left & they wouldn't promote anyone & I was driving to Trenton every day & then one day I got mugged walking to work from the parking lot.... so yeah, when I got my PE & a good job offer I was outta there!

eta: overall, I'm glad I worked there for a few years, I learned a lot, gained a lot of good experience & made a lot of great contacts & am much better at my current because of the experience

Wow, this thread moves fast.  I had to go back like 3 pages to find my last post!
Lisa, thanks for your input.  I'm hoping (first, that I get the job) that I can use it for more experience and contacts.  That is what I was hoping for with this job only it didn't turn out that way.
