Apple cider vinegar = everything cure-r?

Hi all--

Just wondering if anyone here used apple cider vinegar for medicinal purposes. It seems like any time I look up alternative remedies for anything that's bugging me, apple cider vinegar is listed as a possibility, either topical (skin or scalp) or ingested (migraines, etc.)

Has anyone used it for these purposes? Does it work?

i've used it on my skin as a toner... it was nice but smelly.

my mom once was going to do some freak weight loss thing with it. i thought she was crazy.

that's all i've got.

After long days at band camp or at the beach when I could feel that I'd gotten burned, but couldn't see it, it'd rub it on my skin and the burn would go away overnight.

I heard some theory about it helping with weight loss because of all the pectin. But, pectin is a thickener and I'm 95% sure it's not in the vinegar. Go figure.

I have no personal experience with it working as a medicinal remedy, but vinegar does do some nice house cleaning, apple derived or not.

The Braggs people certainly think it's a cure-all. A good friend sent me their "book" on the subject. It was quite, quite fashionable in the 70's among the Mother Earth News set. You're supposed to drink 2 Tablespoons in water before each meal or snack. But of course they want it to be Bragg's special expensive organic apple vinegar.

I've used it with no change in my health. On the flip side, my nutritionist told me to drink the juice of one orange/lemon/grapefruit in water before breakfast every day. It's supposed to get your insides going for the day. It does help with "irregularity" and I find it refreshing if you use cold water. Fresh breath, too.

Speaking of Braggs...when I first became vegetarian I used to see Braggs in just about every recipe going, but now it's rare.  Any reason for that?  I"m just curious.

I read that if you have acid reflex, if you drink two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, it will go away. I don't know if it works or not though.

i've done this.  but you have to dilute it in a bunch of water and i just couldnt drink a whole glass of water that tasted like acv.  yuck.  it worked.  but the taste made it not worth it for me.

It's always been my family's cure all, or as my dad puts it "good shit".

Side note from my childhood... Cider Vinegar and Honey (CVH) mixed in hot water is actually magic, it cures stomach upsets, helps with colds and flu, always helped me breathe easier so I could sleep when I had asthma related chest infections etc...

I know honey isn't vegan - I don't eat it at all in any other way, but I'm not sure how to replace it in CVH  :-\ That's my dilemma of the month. Luckily I'm not currently sick so not needing it.

But yea, apart from that little side note, it's really good for you even without honey.

I get really bad itchy scalp and use ACV as a soother.

Mix 1 cup ACV with 1 cup warm water, add a 10 drops of peppermint oil and VOILA!!! Instant scalp soother! The peppermint oil adds a fresh scent as well as it has an extrenely cooling effect.

* Pour on head after shampoo and before your conditioner

I've read about people who use ACV as a rinse, in place of conditioner... of those people, most also use a baking soda/water paste instead of shampoo. Supposedly that combo is great for Your hair/scalp, but I've yet to try it myself.

Oh! but I DO know of another great use for ACV:
Sanvean introduced me to his method for a healing ritual bath.... You basically fill the tub with water as hot as You can stand; and while the tub is filling up, sprinkle in an ample amount of baking soda and sea salt, which should dissolve pretty well while the water rushes in. Add a good amount of ACV (I 'unno, like, 2 cups per bathtub?) to the water before stepping in.
... for my baths, the water is still SO hot that it takes awhile to get fully submerged, and when I do, it's a real rush.
There's something about that combination of ingredients that makes for a super-cleanse of the body and mind.

I have boiled ACV and water on the stove, then breathed the steam to relieve migraines before.  It doesn't make it go away, but does dull the pain.  My dad drinks vinegar (ACV or whatever they have) for heartburn...just a couple tbs in a glass of water.

ACV is also said to be good for having an immediate affect on lowering blood pressure (i don't remember the exact measurements).

I've done the ACV rinse thing. It works better than many conditioners once you get the mixture right.

I hear it all the time.  No real experience with it though, since I just cannot stomach the smell.

I tried this one time I had a sinus infection and I was really congested. It burnt like hell, and I don't think it really cleared my sinuses.

I've heard to put it in baths, too, although I heard to put about a gallon in a full bathtub and this is supposed to help with sore muscles after a long run or working out or lifting weights.

I dilute it, put in a spray bottle and use that as a kitchen cleaner--countertops, sink, etc. Also works on the bathtub and sink.

Great in salad dressings, too! Probably my favorite way to use it.
