i need help. seriously. losing weight and stuff.

so... i've been vegan for about 10 months now.

i've lost about 15 lbs.  from 170 to 155.  i weighed 155 in high school.
i'm craving meat like never before.
i'm angry at animals now.  it feels like they're doing this to me on purpose.
i don't feel right.

i have 2 theories:

1.  i need to start reading more and get back to why i changed in the first place.  this happens to everyone.

or

2.  i'm not getting enough protein.  and i need to be more careful about what i'm eating.  just because i get full at every meal doesn't mean i'm getting the nutrition i need.

anyone?

Yeah, read books and watch videos and read online information to reaffirm your choice.

What kind of foods are you eating? Incorporate more small meals throughout your day. Take another look at vegan food pyramids, just to give you an idea.

it's pribably not protein you're missing. maybe iron? iron deficiency is much more likey than a protein deficiency.

i eat a lot of seitan.  a lot.

I think a combination of both 1 and 2 is a good idea. Maybe you're not getting enough carbs?

Then I think eating a little throughout the day is a good thing to try. Are you very active? If so, I would eat more, try adding a little more protein to your diet and some good fats.

There are some weeks I feel resentful of food in general not satiating me.  During those times I drink almond milk-protein powder shakes and it helps.  It has nothing to do with my activity levels or anything, it just hits like that sometimes.

When I'm craving sugar I need protein.
When I'm a bottomless pit I need fat.

Maybe your craving meat is something like that.

HH- What protein powder do you use?

I'm not brand loyal, although they're all soy-free.  Soy may/may not inhibit thyroid function/metabolism, so I avoid it.  I use any mix with a complete protein (I have Genuine Health brand Vegan Proteins + and Biochem Sports 100% Vegan Protein) or I combine individual proteins (pea, rice, and hemp).

I use the soy protein powders. Might not be compatible for some but it works well for me and it is a more complete protein than the rice and others. I do have some difficulty with the soy based food products though - way too much fiber.

Exercise is important for anyone, veg*n or not. I would think if one's activity level is increased the body would respond by requesting more nutrition. Variety is quite important too I've found. A nice little tool I've found for checking nutrition values is at  http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Weight loss is one of those things that have a lot of possible causes so a physician would be the best person to consult on such a matter. Health is not a thing to play around with. A good physician would likely rule out medical problems and then refer to a nutritionist.

Not that 155 lbs is fear-inducing, but if there's a concern then go to the experts.
