Online Dating Sites, and other Catastrophies

So how many people have been doing this online dating thing?  I started it a couple of years ago, and almost immediately I met a truly wonderful person, and we ended up getting engaged.  Sad to say it didn't work out for one reason or another, but since those 3 years ago, I've only dated one person who I met online.  I've talked with a lot of people who've seemed to like me, but most of the time they stopped contacting me before we even went on a date.  Some have even deleted their profiles from the dating sites.  I know I'm a bit awkward, but I hope I haven't been creeping anyone out!

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Here's a brief rundown of my last two dates, both of which weren't people I met online, but attempts by friends to set me up.

One date was going decently well until the girl insulted a friend of mine, then proceeded to get drunk and puke all over herself and the walls of my friends house where we had dinner.

The other date was apparently a surprise to the girl I was supposed to meet, because the woman who was setting it up forgot to tell the girl I was coming to dinner.  The girl came to dinner in a sweat suit, with the side of her face all puffy because she had a tooth infection.  She was also drugged up with pain medication, and kept falling asleep at the table.  Sweeeet.

Anyone else have fun/horrifying stories?  :surrender:

have you ever tried greensingles? maybe youd meet more like minded people there.

There's like NOBODY on those specialized ones, though.  I've had terrible luck with them.  No one lives nearby, anyway.  OKcupid has enough people that you can find like-minded ones.

Ok, so based on KMKs recommendation somewhere on this thread, I have signed up for okcupid.com.  I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it.  I just don't know another way to meet people right now...and I want to meet people.  So.  That's that.

You'll like it, I hope!  There is also plentyoffish dot com or something like that.

At work today in the *ahem* bathroom there was one of those entrepreneurial type magazines laying around and the guy who started plentyoffist.  He literally works for an hour a day on the site.  It started as a hobby and is now one of the top 20 websites in the world...err something like that.  ANYWAYS, I didn't read the whole article (saving it for tomorrow), but it was a fairly interesting bathroom read.  It has almost compelled me to join.

I <3 okcupid! I have met lots of cool people from there, including a vegan girl who is a great friend and my ex, who I was with for over two years (and we broke up because he moved to berlin for work).  yay for more okc users!

Hmm, I've heard about plentyoffish, but not this plentyoffist... I should try both.  I've never been on okcupid either, but I might as well try it since I've seemingly been on every other site.  I agree about greensingles though, not many people there.  Veggiedate is a bit better for me, I've at least chatted with some cool people on there, and even met a vegwebber on it.  Unfortunately, all of the cool people I've met are either in Connecticut, or some other NE state besides NY.  Wheet Wheet!

A friend of mine who got married over the fall met her now husband on one of those online dating sites. Don't know which one though. That's all I have to contribute!

Word!  I gotta get me some of that.

I recently tried vegfriends or whatever it is called again...then remembered why I gave up on that whole scene. It would be nice if life was that easy, but there are so many creeps/skeezy people/weirdos out there--if I wanted to hang out with them, I'd buy cars off of craigslist more often...

Come on now I love Craigslist.

For me I think I am on the wrong road to dating.
The occasional date is all I get.
Have not found anyone in a few years worth trying to build any kind of relationship with.
Now I have set my standards a bit higher.
Tired of attracting cougars and married women.

Come on now I love Craigslist.

That's because you're male. Go for it, someone jump on me for being sexist, but it is true.
Somehow, it's just the people selling cars that screw me--I got an awesome bike and some panniers there, and they were fine...

Haha I went to that OkCupid site and one of my first messages was a guy asking if I liked to be watched when I pee.  :-D

I signed up for okcupid the other day, and so far it seems pretty dang cool.  I enjoy doing the matching questions even if some of them are pretty dumb, and I've already been messaged by a person.  I haven't met any new vegans in my area (which is a bit important to me) but so far so good.

I figured I'd give this thread a bump to also see how others are doing (well I hope).  I haven't actually been on a date yet, but I'll let y'all know when I do.  Any success stories?

I'm going to try and bump this thread again to see how everyone is doing, especially since the forums have been changed.

Needless to say to many of you, I met Lotus on Vegweb, and even though we have a long distance relationship, it is going fabulously well.  I'm so lucky to have met her, and am looking forward to fixing our distance problem :).

How is everyone else that is looking for that special someone doing?

awww this thread has come a long way. i met dustin on vegweb, too, but i don't think it really counts as online dating since neither of us was intending on dating the other when we met.

I met K on okc.  He is the last guy I was talking about in this thread.  We're still dating!  He's so great.  I got to meet his family and everything and he got to meet mine.  We went camping with my sisters and saw bears.  We went to a glow-in-the-dark monster mini golf.  Those are pretty much the highlights ;)

Seriously though, yeah, I'm doing great!  K lives in Queens, which is about 2.5 hours away, but we make it work for now.  Yay for lots of good news in this thread!

lol, remember when lotus was dating jorts boy?  Much better days now. :)

That's really awesome Kate, I'm glad to hear that things are going well for you and the boy.  I also met Lotus' family when I was down in SC last week, and she is going to be meeting mine when she comes up for my cousin's wedding.  I'm wearing jorts to the wedding.  Yay for fun with families!

Whoa whoa whoa!  I wouldn't say we "dated" exactlly....more like, we met twice.  hehe.

It's great to hear that things are going well between you and K.  Do you get to see each other very often?...2.5 hours is still kinda far away.  Like Cams said, despite the distance, things are going so well between the two of us.  So far, we've been able to see each other once a month.  Unfortunately, the months seem to be getting longer.......
