Officer "KILLS" police dog :(

A police officer in AZ was arrested for killing his police dog after leaving his dog in his hot car for over 12 hours!!!   >:(

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said:"I am certain Sgt. Lovejoy has suffered greatly from leaving his police dog in a sweltering car" Huh????  How did HE suffer? If he truly loved the dog.....it would not have been left in his car for 12 hours! :'(

It does not say what the temperature was that day....but I'm sure being AZ it was pretty brutal.

"The sheriff's investigation showed Bandit was in Lovejoy's patrol car from about 9 a.m. to a little after 10 p.m. on Aug. 11. During that time, the investigation found that Lovejoy ran errands for his wife, napped for a short time and later ate out with his wife. Lovejoy later found the dead dog in the car."

So....let me guess....he just "forgot" about the dog being in the car, right?...Glad he got his nap time in that day..... what a dickhead!

That line about how Lovejoy "suffered"  WHATEVER!  He napped and went to eat dinner out.  GRRR.

What a moron....AZ's finest right there.  >:(  I hope he is permanently suspensed.

This is so sad.  And, with the Cincinnati mother who's just killed her daughter by leaving her in the car all day, a pretty broad statement's being made about responsibility...this may seem offensive to some, but I think more than dogs and cats should be spayed and neutered - including moron Lovejoy.

According to the article he was booked "on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty".  Why is this a misdemeanor?  Did the dog suffer any less than a human would have under the same conditions?  I'd like to lock him in a car for 12 hours!! >:(

I am not saying that the death penalty would be justified here, but I wounder just how closely he is being treated like anyone else. Ya know what I mean?

Poor Bandit  :'(

I hope this idiot never gets another dog, he should be banned form having any companion animals. And he should be punished.

>:( How can ANYONE be so stupid?! There is no other word for it. Who leaves their dog, alone, inside of a car in Arizona, which is desert country?

He should never own another animal again, most especially he shouldn't work with any police dogs. You'd think a police officer who works with dogs would know better than to do something like this.

To me, it almost seems like he HAD to have known the dog would die in that car. I mean, come on. If you're a police officer, and you're working with a dog ... surely, you have some basic sense of caring for animals. I can't imagine the rule "don't leave your dog in the car on a hot day" was unknown to him.

Yes, exactly! I couldn't have said it better! If he was dumb enough to not know (even if he was never explicitly told; which I couldn't believe for a millisecond) not to leave his police dog in a hot car... He is too dumb to have a job. There is NO excuse.

Since Bandit was a police dog, can this cop not be charged with killing an officer?

The more I think about this, the more I think it HAD to be deliberate on the officer's part. I mean, he left the dog alone in the car for TWELVE hours. Even if he got no lesson on not doing that (which I doubt), surely he got lessons on taking the dog out to pee/poop and feeding him. Surely, he didn't just "forget" that his dog also has biological needs.

I am sure that any officer who works with a police dog as a partner is WELL schooled on caring for dogs. After all, a lot of money goes into the training of those dogs.

I think he should be charged with first degree murder.

I totally agree with you. A police dog is a four legged officer of the law. They are even given badges to show they are. If I killed a cop, you can be sure that I'd be charged with first degree murder BUT killing an officer will most likely get the death penalty in most states.

I mean, really, when a "bad guy" harms a police dog, he's charged accordingly... why the lack of real charges here?!

It's totally sickening.

I completely agree.  He should be charged with the negligent killing of a police officer!  K-9 police officers are normally specially screened, selected, and trained to make sure they will be committed to the best care and continued training of their canine partner since these dogs are such an expensive investment for the departments.  He should be charged the same as anyone else who killed an officer of the law especially since most dept's recognize their canine dogs as equal of protection.

I know here in Overland Park, Kansas the K-9 cars are equipped with sensors inside the vehicles.  When the temperature inside the car/unit gets to a certain high the horn starts honking, drawing attention.  The fire department had the same sensors placed in their car that transports their arson dog to fire scenes and to the fire battalion chief's 's home where she stays and lives.  These guys have to treat their dogs like members of their family and dedicate a majority of their time and life to continual training and maintenance of their dogs and they really bond with them.   Which makes this officer who so negligently (or intentionally) killed his dog so much more worse!  He knew so much better!  >:(
