can you jar a sauce with nutritional yeast in it?

So i make this kickass sauce that has nutritional yeast AND cashews in it and i jarred it last week and this week i opened it and it smells kinda funky but i dont know if thats just how it smells. I then thought "oh my god nutritional yeast".....does it ferment? im worried that it was fermenting in the jar and its now really gross.

Does anyone know if you can jar a sauce that has nutritional yeast in it. Im afraid to eat it bc I dont want to get sick. ::)

was it stored in the fridge? i sure hope sooooo... i would think it should last at least a week in the fridge

No, you don't have to put it in the fridge if you have canned it. Most likely the smell is just nooch being smelly nooch like usual. I would think if it has fermented you would see mold on it by now since it wasn't in a controlled environment.

if it's a nooch like sauce? like melty cheese on vegweb than YES... if it is something like dragonfly's bulk uncheese mix i would store it in the fridge or freezer for sure... nuts can go rancid as well... i always keep them in the freezer to prolong their life if i've had then sitting around for a week or 2

I've never had nuts spoil before and I've especially never had them smell. Nutritional yeast always smells to me. I don't know what nut yeast is....nooch?

Nutritional yeast is processed in a way that breaks up the cells, so there shouldn't be any active yeast left in it.

That said, you're taking a risk in canning a nutritional yeast based sauce from your own recipe, rather than a recipe that has been tested and determined to be safe as far as killing any bacterial contaminants and preventing their growth at room temperature.

Nutritional yeast is not a live yeast.  If it spoiled, something else is going on.

I buy Nacho Mom's vegan queso.  It is sold jarred & unrefrigerated & contains nutritional yeast.  So apparently you can jar something that contains nutritional yeast.  You should probably let your nose be the judge though.  If it smells funky - throw it out.  It should not smell any different then when you canned it.

Thanks everyone. I dont know what it is. Even if it didnt "turn", the smell is enough to turn me off from eating it. I'll just stick to making it fresh each time. oh well.
