Propellant?!

Being one that always checks and reads labels......About a year ago I stopped buying any type of cooking spray. Even in my organic section at my local supermarket EVERY cooking spray...no matter what type, has the ingredient listed "propellant"...what is propellant?!  (sounds like jet engine fuel to me)

Or can someone rec. one that doesn't have it!

Not sure what it is, but if it doesn't have it, the oil won't come out. You could put some oil in a spray bottle and pump spray it.

gee....you would have thought they would have taught me that in college....perfect!
(still curious as to what it is)

Well, simply put, propellant is the gas that forces the oil or whatever out of the container.

You can get oil misters at places like Crate and Barrell and William Sonoma. You manually pump them to build up pressure in the container and the pressure, instead of a gas, forces the oil out. Misters range in price from about $10-20, depending on where you get them and what kind of sale might be going on. We like the William Sonoma one.

So strange, I was going to ask today if anyone knows of a non aerosol cooking spray! I know alot of propellants are nitrous oxide.

Spectrum uses a hydrocarbon blend of propane and isobutane.

....sounds like a combination of a bic lighter,  and what I heat my house/cook with!
There's a Williams Sonoma near my house so I'll just pick up a mister when I get back yo Georgia! Thanks for everyone's input!

target sells them too for about $18 I believe. I bought mine from one of those pampered chef parties years ago.
