sweet potatoes vs. regular potatoes

sweet ones are better for you, right?
but which has fewer calories?
my mom tried explaining, but i didn't get her point.

They are healthy in different ways (i.e. sweet potatoes have more vitamin A while normal potatoes have more potassium). As far as caloric content, they are pretty similar:

They are both delicious in their own ways--lately, I've been addicted to roasted sweet potatoes...yum!

Sweet potatoes also have a lower glycemic index, so they convert to sugars in your body slower. If your worried about weight this is an advantage, because you avoid the rapid rise and crash that can cause you to eat more.
They taste better too (personal preference).

Sweet tatoes (aka yams) make excellent french fries, esp. as chilli fries. Yummers! I fry mine in olive oil....and they won't be available here for another couple of months as our markets are so seasonal...sigh!

I second the sweet potato fries! I love experimenting withe seasonings and such..they're also really good dipped in barbeque sauce.  I haven't fried them though - I generally bake 'em, though it takes a little longer.

I agree. I love them. Love them, I say.

My wife and I are baking up a bunch of them for dinner tonight. Drool.

Regular potatoes taste like, well...yuck, when eaten raw.

No way! As a kid, I used to hang around and beg my mom for a slice of raw potato when she was cooking...a little salt, a lot of crunch, yum! Now that I'm a grown up, I don't have to beg  ;)

I never liked sweet potatoes until I became vegan. Now I love them with just a little EB on them. Maybe this relates to the "taste and smell" thread. :-\

Both of you guys who have never had sweet potatoes need to run, not walk, to your nearest grocery store and buy some.

Poke a few holes in them with a fork. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Put them on a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and fifteen minutes depending on size. Cut them open and eat with a little salt and pepper. I eat them skin and all.

You'll probably kick yourselves for waiting so long once you've tasted them!

Add  a little whipped "honey butter"... You know agave nectar and some earth balance... *YUM*

And mow their lawns.

I used to vehemently proclaim my distaste for them..then again, I'd only had them school cafeteria style: as an overly sweetened casserole.
I really do believe it has to do with the changing tastes...now I can eat a baked sweet potato, straight out of the oven. mmmmmm....oh the sweet simplicity of nature's bounty.
Nearly makes me break into song.  :D

Le baked yam topped with lots of lovely marge-type spread, or olive oil, and a gooood shake of Herbamare...yumbles.

You know, I'm the same way... I used to HATE sweet potatoes (along with squash), and now they are growing on me. I definitely like sweet potatoes better when they "acknowledge their sweetness" (as a weird way of putting it) & are mashed with a little Earth Balance & brown sugar. It drives me crazy when they just have salt on them... Like they're trying to masquerade as "regular" potatoes. I just don't like the taste contrast of the sweet food trying to be a savory food. I don't know know. ??? I like them to actually be sweet!

I think I'm the opposite.  I'm trying SO hard to like sweet potatoes.  The only way I can eat them is with EB.  I can't stand sugar on them.  I think it's a mental block.  Maybe if they weren't called potatoes...or maybe if I hadn't been scarred with that nasty casserole with the marshmellows on top...I don't know.  I buy one occasionally and make myself eat it.  I don't hate them, but I could def do without.  I'm really trying though!!!

I'm the opposite of this too....I much prefer my sweet potatoes savory than sweet.  Baked, roasted, made into fries...yummm. Better than regular potatoes any day!

PS I can never ever get the quote application to work right....maybe there's info about this in the Q&A thread.
