Favourite Independent/Obscure Films?

I love independent films. I love obscure films. My latest jewel-like find is a Swedish film called "Kitchen Stories". It's about a bunch of "efficiency experts" who are trying to improve kitchen usage to cut down on steps, trips across the room etc. in Sweden of the 1950s. And who is their next target group? The Swedish bachelor farmers, of course!

It's splendidly bizarre, touching and sweet. The end is in the wrong place, because they decided to continue on for another 15 min and have a more "realistic" ending, which was silly of them. But it's definitely good.

OMG, how could I forget Louis Malle's great Vanya on 42nd Street with Wallace Shawn in the title role and Julianne Moore as Elena? With no more than a table, some chairs and an old sofa they make you see the old rambling country house, the fields, the rain....it's one of those films I re-watch every two or three months. The translation is excellent and the acting is just other.
Do documentaries work? If so I'd vote for The Corporation, and The Yes Men.

Of course. I love documentaries, too. Most of the ones I love are French, though, so I won't name names beyond "Chambord Sauvage."
