Movies in General

The Juno thread inspired me to start a thread about movies - what have you seen lately, what's good, what's bad, what do you recommend, etc. This may be especially fun what with awards season on the horizon - what's going to take home the gold this year?

Well, I already talked about Juno, so I'll mention the last movie I saw before that - Sweeney Todd. It was really good and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good musical and especially to anyone who likes Tim Burton.

As far as awards season, I think the best film I saw last year as far as quality was Into the Wild. While not perfect, it was a great story and beautifully filmed. Long, but worth the journey. A close second is Lust, Caution. Ang Lee is such a great storyteller and this film proves it further. Another great movie was Once - highly recommended for music lovers of any kind!

The Oscar Noms are in

What does everyone think? Nothing really surprised me, and I'm a little sad that two of my favorite films of 2007 - Into the Wild and Lust Caution - were generally ignored. BUT, I was very happy to see Surf's Up in the animated category! That was easily the biggest surprise for me this year because it was so funny and creative. It kind of got overshadowed because Happy Feet had gotten so much attention before so everyone was like, bah, another penguin movie, but this movie was 1000x better than Happy Feet (a lot of movies were better than Happy Feet, but you catch my drift). I know it won't win because Ratatouille will but I was glad to see the film get recognized. :)

I'm super bummed that Lust Caution didn't get more recognition. What an intense movie! Also, what's up with The Diving Bell & The Butterfly??? No foreign language nod?

As long as No Country For Old Men takes best picture, I'm happy.

Yeah, I haven't heard of any of the foreign language noms and I consider myself pretty well-informed when it comes to film. Even in the obscure categories I've usually at least heard of one or two flicks (except for the short films). I think Lust Caution was disqualified due to a technicality, but that's some BS if you ask me. Such a great movie!

I have decided that I must see "In Bruges" when it comes out.
Even if it gets bad reviews by the time I get around to seeing it, I will ignore them, because
Colin Farrell + Ralph Fiennes = gold.  :P

I saw There Will Be Blood and it was really good. Not the best picture of the year, but Daniel Day Lewis gives a haunting performance as Daniel Plainview.

oscar nominations..
From best to worst in the Best Picture category:

No Country for old men
There Will Be Blood
Juno
Michael Clayton
Atonement

I was actually in Brugge working when they were filming this, but no one told me until the last day when I was leaving.  They were like, "Hey, did you see Colin Farrell?  He's here filming a movie!"

No, and thank you for telling me when it was too late!!! (although I would much rather bump into Ralph Fiennes to be hoenst!)
