planet chicken by hattie ellis (book)

Have any of you read this?  i am half way through.  it is written by a food writer who started lookin at the chicken industry when she was researching a chicken cookbook.  so far it is pretty gruesome, makes me pleased all over again to be a vegan.  I hadn't read anything like this for ages.

Also what vegan/food expose books have you read recently?  anything good?

I just read The Pig Who Sang to the Moon: The Emotional World of Farm Animals by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson and I liked it so much and found it so helpful in its information about farm animals that I bought a copy through Barnes & Noble yesterday.

I'm currently reading  On God and Dogs: A Christian Theology of Compassion for Animals by Stephen H. Webb.  I'm reading it on-line through NetLibrary.

Next up is Sunshine Rider: The First Vegetarian Western by Ric Lynden Hardman.  I found this book when I was looking at the Ector County Public Library's on-line card catalog out of curiosity to see what vegetarian books they hold.  I bought a copy through Barnes & Nobel since I can't find it locally and interlibrary loan turns out to be more expensive than buying the book if it costs less than $20.  Our library rips us off I think. Paying postage is OK but the handling charge = we really don't like messing with interlibrary loans!  >:(

i get free interlibary loans. i never thought a library would CHARGE for them! crazy.

i'm reading the omnivore's delema right now. not so much veg but about food and stuff

I got that from this guy that I had been awkwardly dating for a few weeks last Christmas.  He had dumped me the day before and then showed up at my doorstep and gave me that book. It made me mad, since a) he dumped me because he had issues and b) I am not an omnivore and he had problems with my veganism the entire time we dated c) a few months later I checked his myspace page and he changed who he would like to meet to "people who like to eat pizza and burritos" which I felt was a personal attack.

Sorry to ramble, bad blood I suppose.  I never finished the book, it was frustrating because to me, the answer to his ethical dilemma was obvious, go veg!

My sister and I both read Skinny Bitch over the weekend.  It was very enlightening and made me think about more organic foods, which I always viewed as a waste of money.  Now I'm looking for someone to pass it on to....

Usually the library charges the patron if the library that has the book requires a payment.  Or at least that's what we do where I work. And it doesn't happen often. Just sayin'...  ;)

The Sexual Politics of Meat has been pretty illuminating for me. feminist-vegetarian theory. good stuff.

i like to eat pizza and burritos. i doubt i want to be friends with him though.

Funny, I too like to eat pizza and burritos, just without the cheese which apparently doesn't count, but I don't want to be his friend either.

I have been wanting to read that for so long.  I have it saved in my Amazon shopping cart for a rainy day, or for any day I have some extra cash.....lol

I read another of her books Living Among Meat Eaters and found it very interesting and insightful. http://www.amazon.com/Living-Among-Meat-Eaters-Vegetarians/dp/0826415539/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204589250&sr=1-5

i like how this has just turned into a 'what to read/what i am reading' thread.
i have been looking for some good books as i will be back on the reading market in a few weeks (graduating)... i was looking at some anarchist books, but couldn't really find anything worth reading... i went on a 'reading veg books' kick for a while this summer, so i think i will wait awhile before my next one of those or i get too  :'(
