I've never been much of a fan of scifi. It's not something I'd read, although I did like A Wrinkle in Time in the fourth grade, and that's scifi (right?). So, I'm now addicted to Torchwood (Jack + Ianto = caliente).
I'm watching the new Dr. Who because the character Jack was introduced in that show before the spinoff. I'm completely out of my element here. What other good scifi shows are out there?
I watched the first two episodes of Firefly. How could a show as cool as that get canceled when some of the lesser Star Trek spinoffs were on for years?!?

Oh uh HH--you've been converted! Firefly is going to break your heart! I got sucked very deep into the Firefly world and still partially live there--at least you dont have to go through all the "Their bringing it back! nope...they cancled it...wait it's back...nope...oh look a movie!! Oh It was awesome but didn't make any money so we can't do anything else with it....Look a new Tim Minear series with Natihon Filllion!!! Oh..it got canc;ed after airing two episodes...." It's just been one huge dissapointment after another and as you are finding out the show is FRACKING AWESOME! How did this show get cancled? OK--I gotta stop ranting...I love Firefly.
I have a set of the really sweet "Verse' Worlds" posters! There's one for Persephone, Miranda, Serenity Valley, londinium and Shinon, they are so pretty!

In other sci-fi news, I'm about a hundred pages into Distraction by Bruce Sterling and I'm really enjoying it.
I watched Firefly and Serenity? I don't understand why it wasn't a success. It had to be when it aired and what it was up against in the lineup, because the show rocks.

I always enjoyed Star Trek TNG and X Files. We also watched a mini series that was pretty good called, The Lost Room. We rented it from Blockbuster.
I'll have to check out Firefly though since you all say it's so good. :)
I'm also a huge sci-fi nerd. I agree with everyone on Firefly, Stargate, Star Trek, and most other picks. I'm not a big fan of the X-files, maybe the first couple seasons, but definitely not the monster bullshit.
Some things I'm surprised haven't been mentioned yet....
Babylon 5
the pilot movie is pretty bad, and the first season and a half is kinda a buildup, but after that it's way good. but yes, you have to get through close to 30 hours of mediocre to decent stuff before it gets really good.

This was a sci-fi 'mini' series that was produced by Spielberg. I say 'mini' because it is 10 2-hour episodes. But it roxxors my soxxors. I think it is the first thing that Dakota Fanning really stars in, and she's awesome. Seriously, go rent/buy/download it now.

Consider this sci-fi? First season is amazing. Second season is good but not as good, some lulls (not as much so as the last season of bsg). The writers have apologized for the second season and say the third will be awesome again.
I also liked Earth 2 and First Wave. Sorry if anyone already mentioned any of these, but I had to chime in.
Good news! In addition to my guitar teach liking Neil (Young), he's also a scifi fan, so it might work out that Firefly's intro is something that can be fit into my lessons.
Kirk is the best! I love Shatner! I like Star Trek even though it often kind of sucks and I won't say a bad word against Xena. I never liked the X-Files (is hate too strong of a word?) and I haven't seen Taken. I don't watch much UFO/abduction stuff. I generally prefer when my sci-fi isn't Earthbound.
I like Stargate but it doesn't know when to die. It doesn't help that it is on 7 days a week here, a few times a day! The Atlantis spin-off puts me to sleep. I've seen some Babylon 5 but not enough to know what was going on. Lexx was oddly entertaining. I've seen a few episodes of Eureka- it looks promising. Flik! I totally agree with your assessment of Heroes. I'm a season behind on Battlestar Galactica but I'll watch it eventually (probably buy it too).
Does Cleopatra 2525 count as sci-fi? Because I loved that show! And Galaxy Quest just might be the best sci-fi movie ever.
At work some of us watch TV shows on DVD during lunch. I've never brought in a show, but my friend likes scifi a lot and so I brought in Firefly. Even the non-scifi person likes it and they both wonder why they had never heard of it. Guh! Fox sucks! They should have done a better job promoting it.

Yeah--Fox sucks! After the fiasco with firefly they promoted the hell out of Tim Minears (co-creator of firefly) show Drive taht featured Nathan Fillion. Anywho--the shoe was freaking awesom, it aired two shows...and canceled it! WHAT!?!?!?! All that promotion just to cancel it...they aired the rest of the episodes online...*grrr* *#&$^# Fox!

Yeah, they definitely promoted it a lot, but I thought the commercials made it look really horrible. That's what I meant by not marketed well--too much quantity with no quality.

You can not have a sci fi book list without including Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Read that, than read the parallel book Ender's Shadow.
The entire Ender series rocks my world: Ender's Game, Speaker For The Dead, Xenocide and Children Of The Mind. The Shadow series... not so much, but still worth a read. :)
