Here is some of our conversation..
rebecca lynn: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,337826,00.html
rebecca lynn: Its the same thing here, but worse and the parents weren't vegan
rebecca lynn: people are people, there are the good and the bad
rebecca lynn: it has nothing to do with being vegan
Kathryn Knight: well how do you explain feeding them ONLY vegan foods and them DYING from MALNUTRITION? I know it happens to normal people too.
Kathryn Knight: and the mom was sick, it said she appeared to be having seizures anyway.
rebecca lynn: if it happens to other people than why even bother to say that they were eating vegan food?
Kathryn Knight: because there aren't enough nutrients in the types food they were given to keep them alive.
rebecca lynn: Besides, there are lots of wonderful vegan mothers who are smarter than that ONE couple and feed their kids well
I don't know the whole case history of this--but it sounds like the parent's were negligent for feeding him too little--not for feeding him vegan food--but of course people have to focus on the unfamiliar, vegan part and use that as in excuse to hate--I would just tell your friend that vegans are people too--there are good one, bad ones, and lots of in betweens. What people eat don't necessarily make them who they are.
Look at all our vegan parents on vegweb who are raising perfectly healthy children - and L2A's Noah is a genius as well! ;)b
Just tell your friends about little2ant, the Vegan Lunch Box mom, and all the other vegan mommies with healthy kids! Heck, the PPK has an entire forum of successful vegan parents with vegan kids.
tell her that no child could survive on milk (from a cow or bean) and juice. being vegan has nothing to do with it, because the omni version is just as horrid.

I remember reading this story a while back. That is EXACTLY what happened, it was just turned into a big deal because the couple was vegan.
The veg baby died from malnourishment, not malnutrition. There's a big difference. Tell your friend to google those two words and read the definitions before faulty assumptions are made.
The link you provided says is all in the 2nd paragraph "Prosecutors claimed the baby suffered a prolonged and painful death, not because of what he was fed, but because he was fed too little and that his nutritional needs were deliberately ignored by his parents."
The parents were murderers and mentally unstable. Veganism isn't the issue here.
