What DVD are you watching lately?

I have BBC's Persuasion on, but I can't really get into. I've heard thought that BBC's Sense & Sensibility is good. Of course I"ve watched the Ang Lee Emma Thompson version which is superb... I may get it this week to see  :P

I've got Solaris and The Last Picture Show at home now.

We just borrowed the book of The Road from my in-laws, I'm prepared to get depressed.

For once I have something to add to this thread - we watched The Prestige last weekend.  The in-laws strongly recommended reading the Christopher Priest book, so I'll try to hunt it down at the library soon.

I saw Solaris. It was...well. Not horrible, but I'm glad I didn't have to pay to see it. For a Communist-regime film the concept was interesting.

For the first time? I suggested all A.H. movies to you ages ago! Get on them all. I just added ep. 1 and 2 of A.H. Presents to my Q, just because I want to see them all again.

Let's see, we watched Dune the other day, and I didn't really like it. I loved the book (until the end), but the movie was too fragmented. Eh.

I watched My Left Foot yesterday, and loved it. Recommend.

Watched No Country for Old Men the other night, and I liked it pretty well. However, I fell asleep very near the end, and didn't see it all. P said it was kind of open ended, but thought provoking ? It wasn't a favorite.

We have Perfume: The Story of a Murderer on the way, but we can't remember if we've seen the movie! The book is one of my favorites, and P liked it too. We can't remember if we've seen the movie also, or are just thinking about our images from the book. We'll watch it again, either way. Recommend the book, at least!

(We are new Netflixers!)

(saw IronMan 2 and Prince of Persia in the theater recently-Ironman was fine, but haven't seen the first one, and I really liked Prince of Persia)

don't tell me what to do!!!!
I did watch a bunch of his movies, that just happened to be the last one I've seen.  I saw a little bit of it as a kid, but wanted to see the whole thing.

did I mention I watched Zombieland?  Well, I liked it.
I think Woody Harrelson is my new vegan celebrity crush.

I thought I posted about this movie, but apparently not. We watched The Invention of Lying the other day, and it was awesome. It had some extreme running social commentary while still being quite funny. Great all around movie.

I also saw District 9, which was much better than I had expected. I'm not really into macho-blow it up-kill things movies, but this one had little of that and more of a message, more plot and story. I'm hoping for a sequel.

I'm with you on the District 9 in that I enjoyed it more than I thought.  But I was actually disappointed with The Invention of Lying.  It had it's moments but I was kind of bored with it.

Haha!  He loves twinkies in that movie though!  Ick.

Zombieland was pretty funny, it's one we're planning to watch again.

No Country is one of my all-time favorite. Easily the best movie to come out in the last 6 years. I saw Perfume in theatres and it was pretty good. Though people were definitely walking out of the theatre during it....

It seems that we have very different taste in movies, AC. That's sad, because I love to recommend things!

Well, I have a very eclectic taste in movies. I like a bunch of different things, but I don't like a lot of things. Don't give up on me!

eta: and if you ever friend me on netflix, some of the reviews are based on P. He loves a lot more action type/sci fi.

You could replace "No Country for Old Men" with any other Coen brothers movie and this sentence would still make sense. I have watched nearly all their movies, but at the end of each one I'm left with my mouth agape grasping for answers.

We watched "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price last night. It's kind of a forerunner to modern zombie movies (it also inspired the original "Night of the Living Dead," which I also love). It was fantastic. I love old horror movies. They possess a quality that modern ones do not--they don't rely on blood and violence to scare your socks off.

AC, you like Hitchcock so your taste can't be that bad. You should add Aur Revoir Les Enfants to your queue and let me know what you think.

I watched it tonight. It was :(. I really liked it, though. At first I thought I just liked it, because it did drag along in a couple spots, but then I liked it more and more. Very sad. I give it a solid 4.

I love French cinema, and enjoy the pace of films like that. It's definitely not for everyone.

If you like horror, watch these:

Them, Inside, Let The Right One In, Gozu.

I've often wondered how veg*n actors manage scenes where they have to be eating meat etc. Of course American actors do tend to play with the food more than eat it, on TV or movies...cut it up, push it around the plate, raise the fork to your mouth just before you speak and then quietly lower it while you talk...no food goes in. French actors simply sit there and eat for real. They must do everything on one take.

The actor who played Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite is vegetarian and there are scenes where he is eating steak. In interviews he said he would chew it and not swallow. Instead he would spit it out. Gross :(

But I know what you mean about French actors truly eating a full meal. I love French cinema!

I'm a great watcher of French TV series too, particularly detective/cop ones. One of my favourites, La Crim', was fun to watch because not only did they really eat during "lunch break" scenes...the older actors really seemed to enjoy the food! I don't know if they just waited till lunchtime to film those scenes or what.

I love French comedies! they can be so bizarre it's hard to describe them to someone else, and yet they make perfect sense at the time! If you can, get hold of "Vilaine" (the comedy, NOT "La Vilaine" the horror flick, which is good but not at all funny). In English I think they called it Ugly Melanie.

Other comedies I love:
Lulu, Roi de France

Un Homme Presque Ideal

Un Monde Presque Paisible (not ha-ha funny but good)

Un Paradis Pour Deux (romcom)

Speaking of French films, I just watched Diabolique (1955).  It was good--kept me guessing.  The funny thing is that I had seen the American remake years ago and it was so unmemorable that it didn't spoil the ending of the original for me. ;D
