Where Were You When It Happened? Inauguration 2009

I trekked halfway across the city, came across barricade after barricade after barricade, trying to get down to the viewing area on the National Mall. Finally was able to find a checkpoint where we could get down to the Mall. I ended up in the shadow of the Washington Monument right across from the White House (yes, that's about 1.5 miles away from the actual swearing-in, but we were right near a Jumbo-tron). I was sandwiched in between my parents and 2 million other Americans, but this city was amazing. Amazing. Amazing. The camaraderie and sense of community I have felt from locals, tourists, foreigners, friends, families these past 4-5 days has been incredible. I have done more in these past few days than I have in a long time-- metroed and biked all around this city, seen some amazing things, bonded with my fellow humans-- and it inspired me to live every moment like that! It also inspired me to work hard for peace in every way that I personally can. It's not about Obama anymore-- it's about what we do next. I want to be a part of it.

I hope you enjoyed watching/experiencing it in your own way.

Awesome that you got to be there. I can't even begin to imagine the energy.

I sat at my desk, lone liberal  in my conservative office, and listened on the radio.

And smiled.

I watched the inauguration in my history class. Lucky me to have HISTORY of all classes while it was happening!

I watched Obama's speech again last night when my boyfriend got home and I told him he should see it. Both times it made my eyes a little misty. I haven't been proud of the US President in so long. I haven't been proud of how the world sees this country. Now I'm looking forward to a country that's actually united.

The man has a lot on his plate, but he really is a powerful inspiration. I hope that regular people harness his energy and start doing good now instead of standing by and waiting.

My mid-day class professors cancelled class yesterday, so I was at home with my cat.

Later in the evening I had government class. The prof showed the video, and started a dicussion. All hell broke loose.

I was in completely the wrong place and time zone. Missed it entirely.

And that makes me a sad panda.

I was in the wrong time zone too...but the news played bits of it all day. Particularly France, I suppose as a spite at the outgoing "president" who gave us "freedom fries." ::)

At work they unblocked a website so we could watch it, but I was out looking at chicken poop.

watched it from my queer group's office on campus (in Canada!) We have a Yank among us, who was especially excited ;)

PS: the speech, while I'm sure it was better than Bush's, still left a few things to be desired...but I guess you can't have everything.

Working out at the gym with a coworker.  Was good.  I got 10 miles on the bike in that 45 minutes.  hahah

i watched it on a big projection screen in the science classroom with about 60 second graders... most of whom voted for mccain during our schools elections... but were still really excited to see obama.  they would hoot and holler every time they saw him

I had clinic (where I follow around an audiologist as sort of an apprentice) all day, so I expected not to be able to see anything.  When I got there, my supervisor was complaining to her boss about having patients during the inauguration.  She went to the local news website on her computer and full-screened the feed they were showing, and we watched the beginning...  Then a patient no-showed... then another... we watched Biden get sworn in, and then... the next one showed up.  So, we missed the most important part, but it was awesome that I actually got to see some of it.

My husband works for a Unitarian church, and they had a big inauguration party, where they showed it on a huge screen and had food catered, and the staff got to watch it with whatever congregants showed up - mostly retired people and families, about 150 total.

Also, I was totally shocked, but the local school district actually gave everyone the day off!

Hey, that's exactly where I was! I had the same experience with all the barricades, as well.

on my couch with my daughter and my cat. I let her stay home so we could watch the whole deal together. They did not show it at her school. Which thoroughly disgusts me.

But, we watched History being made together and it will be something we will talk about for years.

PS: I cried. Alot. I am soooooooo proud and happy. :D  :)>>>

Itwasitwasitwas!! I've never experienced this city the way I did this weekend, and I have lived here for 10 years. Amazing stuff, truly.

Wait, that was YOU?!?! You stepped on my foot! :>

Nah, I'm just teasing. That's where EVERYONE was. All of my friends who I wasn't able to text/call because the networks were down, we must have all been within a few hundred feet of each other, but of course we didn't see anyone because there were tens of thousands of people right there. Madness!!! :)

I had work that day, but no students, so I went out to get some lunch.  I was driving back and listened to it on the radio.  I actually got back to the parking lot right before the oath was going to happen, so I stayed in the parking lot with the radio on until he'd been sworn in because I didn't want to miss it.  I started crying when the violins started going during the John Williams piece.
