Christian vegans

I realize that this has nothing to do with recipes but most forums here dont anyways so i would like to start a forum on christian thoughts. Please remember that all of us here like for our beliefs of vegism to be respected so keep it respectfull.

I would first like to say that i am very mad that when i typed christian vegans into my search bar the first page it brought up was a wanna be preacher who is so lost in the bible that he calls vegans witches.

I'm not a Christian, but I'm interested in seeing how this thread develops. I think that religions all over the world have the power (and, really, the obligation) to teach their followers to respect the earth and all of its creatures (a recent example being the Evangelical environmentalist movement).

:o yay for vegan Christians? .....hum...I have something I really do want to say...

Your neighbor is probally a pretty bad reflection of Jesus. I'm a pretty bad reflection of God too... I know that Christians come across as really judgmental and mean and ....erg! I get mad about that too...I just wish that people understood that God..is all about love for us...like everything in human history has been building up to God wanting to be with us...wanting to save us from the very things that are killing this world today. And I get so mad with my fellow Christians and even with myself when we open our mouths and say anything that isn't in love.

So...yeah..now I feel like hippie...peace out!

There's a yahoo group for Christian Vegetarians that is very active.  I think a number of them are vegan.  The discussion is very lively and the group is moderated to keep out unbelievers, both in Christianity and Vegetarianism:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/christianveg/

Here's their description:

This discussion group is for those Christians interested in vegetarianism as a way to witness to the compassion, love, and peace of Christ by choosing vegetarian diets. We see vegetarianism as good, responsible stewardship of God's Creation. At christianveg, we ask questions and discuss ideas and strategies for encouraging other Christians to consider plant-based diets.

I belong there and although I love vegweb, too much other discussion goes on here and except for a comment or two when I can work it in and not be too far off topic, I prefer to discuss the deeper issues of Christian faith and vegetarianism elsewhere.  I don't know if there's a atheism and vegetarianism group, but if there was, I'd prefer that the atheists in the group also discuss the "deeper" issues of not believing in God when the proof is in the bird singing in the tree outside your window and vegetarianism, there (and not here.)  As you might guess this could cause a lot of nasty fights and I love the peacefulness and kindness of vegweb and don't want to risk changing it.  I hope my fellow vegwebers of all creeds agree with me.  If not, I'll just ignore this topic.  I'm devout enough not to want to be involved in any potential witch burning!

Haha, I searched Christian vegans, just now and I got that. Here's the link: http://www.landoverbaptist.org/sermons/vegans.html  Being a Protestant I am disgusted by his teachings, he'll brainwash a lot of people, I'll keep him in my prayers.

I am a Christian vegetarian.... Baptist at that (lol). I'm kind of an 'outcast' Baptist, me being so liberal and all but I don't care. I would think Jesus would be appalled by how humans treat helpless and trusting animals so.... I know in my heart my beliefs are right. Glad to know there are other Christain vegetarians/vegans. They are hard to come by!

I have been both a Christian and a vegan for about thirty years. Although God's plan for man has got pretty messed up through the years, in the beginning, it is clear that the diet was vegan.
"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Check out Eating Mercifully at the HSUS website.
Dale and Elaine (in the movie) run a sanctuary in the community where I live, and they have a great perspective.
I'm not religious, but I can really respect interpreting the bible and using your faith to show compassion to animals.

i think Christianity and veganism fit hand and hand... one quote i liked that i cannot find now said something like how can u expect God to show compassion for u when u get to the gates of heaven when u cannot show compassion for God's animals :)

but...."veganism" is only one form of compassion.  Vegetarianism is compassion.  Giving up beef is compassion.  Giving up lobster/crabs is compassion.

What about not making any dietary changes but devoting one's life to helping animals?  Being a rescue worker? Shelter volunteer? Etc.  What about someone who is none of those but is a policeman/fireman and saves lives (or the life of ...one person... even)? What about being a teacher, making a small pay but devoting your life's work to educating today's youth?

I think there are so many unlimited ways in which we, as human beings - can express compassion outwardly to the world, and that veganism is just but one of many, not necessarily any better or worse then any other method of compassion, just one that happens to work best with who we might be, as an individual.

I don't buy this "cap and trade" system of compassion.  It's not as if you have a karmic savings account, and as long as you do enough good deeds, you earn your way into the clear.  If anything (since we are talking about Christianity), the Bible warns against such things.  There is no quota of good deeds for your life--you need to be compassionate in general, and there is always an opportunity to be more compassionate.

Also, veganism doesn't belong in the same category as those other things.  I can teach, volunteer at a shelter, or be a firefighter regardless of my lifestyle as a vegan, because veganism requires minimal to no extra resources or time.  It's not like "Oh, I was going to help so-and-so, but I was too busy being vegan!"  If I have time in my schedule to grocery shop, I can be vegan.  I'm a teacher, but that doesn't get me off the hook to abuse and kill animals.  What horrid logic.

i just don't think God created such beautiful creatures for us to use the way we do now is all i am saying... i don't think being vegan is your ticket to heaven that's for sure... i just thought that quote i heard was a good point and worth thinking about

To say "veganism requires minimal to no extra resources or time" is ridiculous.  It takes a lot of resources, that being personal time and energy.  Your statement is tantamount to telling a cigarette smoker "hey, it's easy to stop smoking - just stop".  Just because one person may choose veganism is right for them, doesn't mean it's just so easy for anyone else.  It's a personal choice and if it's not a choice someone is at a place in their life to make - then it's likely to be very difficult.

Trying to follow a vegan diet isn't simple, it takes time, thought, consideration, adjustments - it has to be something someone is ready to do.

Last, who exactly makes this all pervasive decision of what category "veganism" does or doesn't belong in? You? Enough said.
