Ingredient Swap

Hey all,

I thought this might be a cool idea, since us VegWebber's live all over the place! I know some of my homies in NZ have a hard time finding Latin/ Mexican ingredients that I find in abundance... I love little swaps and gift exchanges, and even just sending peeps "presents" out of the kindness of my little vegan heart...

If you have access to something cool, let us know!

If you run into some weird spice, condiment, or ingredient that you want to share do so!

I have access to basically anything in Viva Vegan (Latin/Mexican)... Dried chilies, spices, garbanzo bean flour, nut yeast, you name it...

I also have an Indian grocery store right down the street and have access to black salt (for that distinct "eggy smell") and an abundance of other spices...

There is a Persian market across the street with spices, condiments, and chilies, dried fruits, dried beans of all kinds, exotic flours, etc

2 health food stores with tons of hard to find products and vegan goodies... Trader Joe's right down the street

I do have access to Asian ingredients as well, but it's a little drive (15 minutes North... Nothing like FB's Asian loot though)

If you run into something in a cookbook that you haven't seen/ heard of shout out!

I love that 15 minutes seems like a long way to you. I used to think that way, but nashville has changed my mind a bit. It's a solid 30 minutes to trader joe's and whole foods, 25 to the asian market, 20 to the indian market.

It's 3-4 hours to my closest Whole Foods and Trader Joes, haha.

I can't offer to participate because anything I have here you have better and cheaper there.
But I'd take a care package full of Persian and Indian goodies!  ;D

I don't even have a WF or TJ's in my area...the closest ones are in NYC or out of state o_o. We have a store called "Wegmans" around here that is similar to WF, and has a pretty decent international section (asian, indian, mexican) and "Natural foods" section with vegan food products.

That's exactly the same as me but Wegmans are in western NY and I'm in eastern NY where we have Hannafords (but it's nothing like WF).

That sucks :p I mean, WF is a helluva lot better than Wegmans, but Wegmans beats our other local grocery, Tops. I am soooo sick of living in WNY, it is not a vegan friendly place.

It sounds like ENY/capital region is more vegan friendly. Hannafords has a lot of vegan and natural stuff here and there's a co-op in Albany, vegan and vegan friendly restaurants and a vegan bakery here.

if ya lemme know what you want i might just do so dear yabbit

FB prob has similar stuff to me but better cause she's in LA area... FB i have a hard time finding thai stuff but most of it is stuff that i don't think would ship so well (lime leaves and lemon grass are some that pop in my mind)

there's dried lemongrass and galangal (but neither is as good as fresh, so that doesn't really help). Lemongrass also comes pre-cut and frozen, so that might keep better, or at least stores more easily. Supposedly there's dried lime leaves, but I haven't actually seen them, only fresh. Hm.

Even so, if you wanted to trade, priority mail across the city probably won't be the end of the world. However, there are some things (like galangal) that will spoil even in refrigeration after a week or so, so when I get it I make sure I have a lot of uses for it that week (but maybe it could be chopped and then frozen. this is what I do for thai chiles).

I love exploring ethnic stores. I love how you have access to so many! latin ingredients seem to be the hardest for me to find. Chilis in adobo? I have never seen them! But I just picked up black salt yesterday from an Indian store yesterday. Wahoo!

The Asian market I go to has fresh Thai Lime Leaves about 50% of the time. They keep pretty well, and freeze VERY well.

you think they sell such things in my typical asian ranch market? maybe i should look harder? i notice that i seem to overlook things until i remember seeing them as an ingredient i needed

How do you think lime leaves would dehydrate?

my lime leaves actually dehydrated on their own in the fridge o_O

amy, i found the lime leaves packaged in a styrofoam tray in the produce section at a market. I *think* I've seen frozen. I've never seen them at 99 ranch, though, if that's the market you're thinking of.

I freeze mine because they come in the styrofoam packaging, and who needs 30 lime leaves to use in a week's time?

I wouldn't know Persian if it bit me on the butt, but Indian.....that I can do.  What are you in need of?

As far as markets go, I have access to:

Asian, of all kinds
Mexican
Cuban/Latin American
Indian
West Indian/Jamaican/Hatian
Italian Gourmet
Greek/Armenian/Turkish

Does anyone have access to black salt and barley malt powder? For the life of me, I cannot find these in my "local" stores. I am very much reluctant to say that I do not have much to offer in return because I seriously live in perhaps the least vegan friendly part of New York State. I can bake something though, if someone is willing to swap :)
