Bi-phasic Sleeping
http://www.straighttothebar.com/2006/11/biphasic_sleep_resources.html
Basically it's splitting up the normal one-big-sleep-through-the-night into two: a 90 minute sleep at another time (eg afternoon/early evening) and then a 3 or 4.5 hour sleep later at night. It's based on the belief that the average sleep cycle is 90 minutes so sleeping in multiples of that will leave you feeling the most refreshed and rested.. meaning the sleep you get is better quality, and you can get more waking hours out of a day.
Has anyone ever heard of this/tried it?
One of my best friends has started doing it and reckons that after the adjustment period of a week or so it's actually quite amazing. It sounds to me like just the sort of strange idea that I could try, as I've always had a very disfunctional relationship with sleep. So I'm thinking of giving it go (no harm in trying these things out) and wondered if anyone has any experience/insight?
Theo- when are you going to start?
I think I will start on Wednesday. I go home to my parents for the holidays then, so I will be somewhere with no time committments and can get into the swing of it without disturbing M's sleep or potentially missing evening activities I do here.
You?
I'm going to start when all of this medical stuff is over. So, hopefully soon.
Just kicked off, had my first 90 minute nap from 4.30pm til 6pm :) Tonight I will sleep from 1am and oh my goodness...try to wake up at 5.30. Eep!
let us know how it goes :D
I know you would anyway, but just wanted to make sure!
so are you up yet? : )
I thought about you theo when I woke at 6.30am today and wondered how you were getting on!
I got up, I was quite zombie like! It was ok once I got moving though. I'm naturally a late night rather than early morning person, so it's a bit weird, and I had troubles getting to sleep last night so adjusted the wakeup time accordingly. It might be all in my head because I've heard it's good, but it does seem easier to wake up after multiples of 90 minutes.
So far! :P
I think I'm going to start this tonight. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
Okay, so I just woke up from my first 90 minute nap. Lately my insomnia has been terrible and I've only been sleeping for about 2-4 hours a night. I had to take a melatonin to even take this nap and I woke up a bunch of times during it. It's going to take me a few days to adjust and really get the hang of this. Anyway, my nap was from 7:30pm-9pm and I'm going to aim to go back to sleep at 2am and attempt to wake up at 6:30am. No matter what, I think the sleep routine will help me overall simply because it's a routine and right now I don't have any. I usually just go to bed when I can and then get woken up at 6:30am. I feel like crap right now but I felt like crap before, too. I'll report back again after 6:30am!
I found this while reading up on the subject, I thought it was interesting: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/179882.php
Theo- are you still doing this?
Hello! I am not really :S I really struggle with the whole routine thing too, and I have serious issues with deciding that it's a good idea to stop being awake at any point in the day time. It's all I can do to stop being awake at night (right now it's 1am...) ! How is it working out for you? I'm still really interested in the idea, perhaps if I plan it better I can give it a more serious go. I did have a 3 hour nap the other day, it was beauuuuutiful but I think that's more to do with major sleep debt than any sort of biphasic-ness.
I haven't been doing it, my sleep has been all over the board! Yesterday I took a 45 minute nap because I was soooooo tired, I think next time I need to take a nap I might try a 90 minute one just to see how I feel afterwards.
