The Flu Shot

Where do you guys stand on this? I have no intention of getting it but they are offering it here at work. My knowledge about it is limited so I thought I would reach out to you guys.
Thanks!
Michelle ;D
I've never had a flu shot and I don't plan to ever get one. I am not a big fan of unnecessary medications and I don't consider flu shots to be "necessary". Also, I heard once that you shouldn't get a flu shot if you are allergic to eggs!?? Whether that means that there is some component of eggs in the shot or not, I do not know. I do know when I google "flu shot vegan", I come up with a lot of links that say they are not!
I never have gotten one and don't plan to. I think for individuals with compromised immune systems it's maybe a good idea, but they have to make the vaccines months before they even know what strain of flu will be the most common that season, which is why many people still get the flu even with the shot.
I had a friend in high school who got violently ill if she didn't get a flu shot, so for people like that, I say more power to you. I rarely get sick, so it seems like a waste of time/money/etc.
From a vegan perspective, the vaccines are grown in eggs, so that's an issue--I don't know how I feel about that since that continues to be the dominate way to create vaccines, but some might have a big problem with that aspect.
From a public health perspective, I think they are beneficial, but so is making sick employees (or people) stay home from work so they don't infect other employees (or people). Also, people need to WASH THEIR DIRTY HANDS! ;D
After all of my rambling...it's really up to you :)
AS stated above....never....ever.. ;)
No reason to.
Yeah, I have heard that too. Bad reactions and such.
I am a believer in taking care of your body and being healthy so as to ward of colds/flus in the first place. In 3 years I have been sick once... No flu shot for me, LOL. But, I know that there are some strong opinions out there aginst it. And this is one subject where I find my knowledge lacking.
Personally, I view them as unnecessary and not worth wasting time, government money, and testing on. However, until I'm out of the house, I have to get one every year. >:(
Why?!?!?!? :P For school????...or do your parents make you get one? :-\

I don't think schools can make you get flu shots--I've never heard of one anyway.
As much as I'm against animal suffering, I'm equally against Fee suffering...and those shots look like they hurt. I say NAY!
They really push the flu shot here esp for the elderly. And yet, the older friends I have who have had the shots in the last couple of years have gotten really, really ill from the shots. And this is helpful because...?
Also, another question I always have when this comes up: OK, things like polio, rabies, smallpox, whatever--you know what it is you're up against and the vaccines are specific. But flu (grippe) is a VIRUS, right? How do they know what "this year's bug" is going to be, far enough in advance to come out with a vaccine? Unless of course it's a massive conspiracy, which I doubt? And yet they always say there's no cure for the common cold because viruses mutate all the time...
Personally, I'll pass. If I'm in such a weakened state that the flu can carry me off in spite of miso, bedrest and fruit juice...so be it.
yep, I'm not a fan either. Just seems unnessary. Ever year my mom gets one & she still gets sick. ::)
It's probably safer to get it now then get it after a flu epidemic breaks out. Of course, if you're like me and you're scared to death of needles, you wouldn't get it unless you had to (har har!).
I never knew vaccines were grown in eggs? Don't vaccines just contain dead, weakened pathogens or just antigens from the pathogen? Hmmm
My job also asks if flu shots were given at work would I get one. I said no, I remember getting one in college and having a bad reaction. I know that there are side effects that can occur but I'm just not interested.
Meikmeika
I don't have a choice whether I want the flu shot or not. I work in a hospital & although management doesn't come right out & say it, it is pretty much mandatory. I can refuse because of an allergy or religious reasons & there are no questions asked but if I refuse the shot & we have an outbreak, I cannot report to work until the outbreak is over & if I don't work, I don't get paid. I've gotten the flu shot for years & never been sick....never was sick before the flu shot either.
By getting the shot, I am not only protecting myself but I am protecting every single person I come into contact with, at work, at home & in the community.
Living & working during the SARS outbreak scared the ever-lovin' crap out of me & I'll take the vaccine every time.
I've never gotten it, never had the flu.
People still get the flu on the flu shot. It's not 100% effective. I always found it ironic when people go all out to protect themselves against the flu via shots, antibacterial wipes, vitamin C overdosing, etc. and STILL wind up getting it.
Personally, I think health is directly related to the food I eat, the exercise I get. If my habits are crappy, my immune system will be crappy.

So if avian flu mutates & goes pandemic, you won't get the vaccine?
I say Nay as well...I rough it out if it comes along :)
where i'm from (the UK) they don't hand out the flu vaccine willy nilly- you have to be special to get it- eg: have problems with your heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys etc, a weakened immunity from something like chemo or AIDS, live in a residential home (not school), or be elderly.
i've had a flu shot twice in my 27 years (i'm eligable in the UK as an asthmatic, but i'm dubious about the diagnosis cos i can breathe perfectly fine, lol), and so far in my life, i've had the flu (real flu- as aposed to one of those heavy colds that many people seem to think is flu*) just one time- when i was about 14.
it wasn't great fun. i was flat on my back in bed for a week, and felt crap for another week. if i hadn't have lived with my family, i'd have been in a pickle, cos i couldn't get myself a drink, or walk unaided to the bathroom, etc, but i didn't get close to dying or anything, i was just incapacitated somewhat.
i think the flu vaccine is something like 70% effective, if they guess the developing strain right. i think its a good idea to have it if you have a lousy chance of bouncing back from flu, or you're in contact with a lot of at risk people (eg: if you work in a residential care home) but if you're young, fit, and healthy, odds are you'll be just fine without it.
*my doctor says the easiest way to judge if you have flu or just a very heavy cold, is the £50 note/$100 bill test. apparently, if you were lying in your sick bed, and saw a note/bill resting on your window-ledge just out of arms reach- if you'd got flu, you'd lie there and watch it blow away, you'd not even try and get up to reach for it, thats how sick you'd feel.
So if avian flu mutates & goes pandemic, you won't get the vaccine?
Probably not. I'll take my chances. But, by then, I'm hoping I'll be living on an uninhabited island, far from civilization, lol. (I'm a bit of a recluse.)
I never knew vaccines were grown in eggs? Don't vaccines just contain dead, weakened pathogens or just antigens from the pathogen? Hmmm
Yes, they do contain dead or weakened pathogens, but they need a culture for those pathogens to reproduce in in order to produce the vaccines, and apparently eggs are good at that.
Want to know what is in vaccines? http://www.informedchoice.info/cocktail.html
I do not vaccinate my children or myself. I have done alot of research and view them as unnecessary and often harmful. Here is a thread that I posted my opinion as well as links and books with good information.

Here is what I posted, to save time for all you dial-up folks:
This is such a controversial topic. I decide not to vaccinate (before I became vegan) my children after doing extensive research on the subject. If you want to know what is in the vaccines, check it out here: http://www.informedchoice.info/cocktail.html Gross, I know.
Diseases run their course in time, without intervention, contrary to what the drug companies will have us believe. For example, Pertussis death rate declined more than 75% before the vaccine was introduced. Looking at the larger scale (50 years as opposed to 5 years before) will show the natural decline. The drug companies don`t want us to know. The more people who blindly vaccinate without asking questions is more money in their pockets. They are not concerned about our safety or health. It`s a flawed system that runs on greed. And about the Doctors: They learn from books assigned to them from the same flawed system. Doctors don`t have to be educated about alternatives or any preventative measures, they are taught how to treat the sickness, not prevent it. The majority of people I know personally that got the flu shot got sick for weeks after. Healthy people. It is supposed to prevent it... The Chicken Pox vaccine wears off and it is way more dangerous to get it as an adult. There is so much more. Look into it yourself, listen to both sides of the story. Do lots and lots of research. Question Authority. In Canada, the preschools and schools can say the child must be vaccinated, but it is illegal to not accept an unvaccinated child. What I did for my son`s preschool is write them a note saying I know the benefits and risks of not vaccinating.
