how do you get enough calories...

...without eating a ton of bread?
I'm no carb phobe, but I do not feel good when my main source of calories comes from bread, tortillas and pastas (even whole-wheat). But since a lot of my other sources of cals comes from fruit and veggies, I find these aren't enough to sustain me or give me energy. gah, really frustrating! And I've recently amped up my exercise routine and I want to build up a wee little bit of muscle
so anyway, how else can I increase my calories w/ healthy foods? what does everyone else usually eat? appreciate it! ;)
I don't like carbs! I think I am a bit intolerant to them, actually.
I don't get enough calories, hence a nice healthy weight loss over the past 6 to 9 months. Don't get me wrong, I eat all the time and I absolutely anything I want to eat (that is vegan). I mean, I don't say no sweets or snacks or limit my meals in any way, ever.
Where are you getting your protein? Beans are wonderful source. THey are high in fiber, so you feel full longer. They are high in many nutrients as well. The reason I love them so that they stabilize my blood sugar like none other. A meal with some beans, grains and some form of fat lasts me for hours. Like tacos with black bean and veggie fillings iwth fresh avocado. That was a great meal and I lasted from 5 p.m. till 6 a.m. before I had to eat again.
Tofu, TSP, tempeh are all good soy sources of protein. I'll be honest with you though, I find soy proteins to be "light" and easily digestible -- think hungry again soon.
Eating beans with whole grains gives your body the best shot at combining proteins for complete protein building blocks.
Hmm, if you feel bad after eating grain foods, maybe it's the wheat/gluten, not the carbs. Just a guess, who knows.
I get the majority of my calories from carbohydrates (as it should be anyway), most of which comes from some form of a grain food (quinoa, flour-products, rice, etc.), some from sugar (sugar-holic here), some from legumes, and some from fruit and other things.
Bread, tortillas, and pasta all sound pretty processed, maybe switching to unprocessed whole grains would leave you feeling better...
Well, I don't know how healthy this is ... but because it's summer, I am OBSESSED with avocados. I eat 5 a day. Seriously. Considering a avocado is anywhere between 250 and 300 calories ... you can EASILY get enough calories.
Of course, it's been suggested that I need to join Avocados Anonymous.
Otherwise, I agree with the previous poster. If you feel bad when eating grain, it's very likely that it could be the wheat or gluten. Try some gluten free grains.
Peanut butter! Not just for sandwiches, you know. A spoonful, or two, doesn't need to be on bread to be tasty. If you don't care for plain PB, you could always eat it with celery sticks or apple wedges.
I think the first thing is to figure out how many carbs, protein, and fat you eat each day. Somewhere I read about a 50% carb - 20% protein - 30% fat guideline. I don't know if someone has a better guideline. I think mine came from the American Heart Association.
I eat 1,200 - 1,400 calories a day. That's equivalent to 150 - 175 grams of carbs (4 calories per gram), 60 - 70 grams of protein (4 calories per gram), and 40 - 45 grams of fat.
I tend to eat carb heavy because my stomach gets upset at just the thought of eating protein and what I eat have very little fat naturally. So, I track my grams and when I'm consistently low in protein I hide it in other foods - like I sprinkle rice protein on soy yogurt. Keep track of your grams of each and that will tell you the areas in which you're short and then you can eat more in that/those group(s).
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one getting TOO many calories! I eat a lot of carbs (oatmeal, fruit, brown rice, etc.) and have no trouble eating at least 1,600 or so calories a day. I WISH I was struggling to get 1,200!

If it helps in the cosmic balance: I have a super slow metabolism. I'm on medication for it, I hike, don't eat a lot, and am still overweight. I think people are supposed to get more than what I eat generally, but I don't convert food to energy. I used to be disgruntled about this, but I realized that to make every calorie count I have to be cognizant about everything I eat and that because of my diligence I eat much healthier foods than I otherwise might. It's my feel good Pollyanna thought process when I bypass things like bread.
I have heard a couple of different places that about 1/3 of all women cannot tolerate starchy carbs of any kind. There are celiacs, but this is like a hypoceliac thing. Breads, pasta, cooked grains...they all give me the scoots and I don't eat much of them. There are just times when I can't seem to feel full at all and I eat some. That, and I get tired of eating just veggies and protein sources.
I am fat at 1200 to 1400 calories a day! I wish I would eat less, but I know I'd be missing a lot of things I needed if I did that.
Huh... I used to like, but now naturally stay away from, the foods you mentioned, LD1. Bread, pasta, grains, rice, potatoes. I call it my whitish, bland food list. It's a preference more than an active decision. I wonder now if I'm "hypoceliac." Sometimes when my body decides something I'll just go with the flow and figure out the reason later. The only confusing part is that I really like lentils, which have starch - but I prefer whole lentils so maybe the fiber counterbalances the starchiness. You've given me something to think about.
