Nuts and regularity? (Being as "tasteful" as I can)

OK maybe this is a dumb question but I'm the only veggie I know besides you guys. There are some in this town, I just don't know any well enough to talk to.
Does anyone else find that eating specifically walnuts at breakfast helps get things moving? In my case it is often the answer. I don't know if this is "normal" or if maybe what I actually have is a mild reaction, not of allergy obviously but maybe my body doesn't actually like them?
Does this make any sense? Thought not. Sigh...
(But I guess if we can have the thread on the Diva thing, we can discuss this...
Nothing against the Diva thing. I once saw something called a "Tassaway" in a magazine ad in the 70's that was basically the same principal, but never saw it in any shops and never saw another ad.)

I personally don't like walnuts (unless they are hidden in things like banana bread or something), but it looks like it's not a "rejection" by your body--apparently walnuts have a lot of fiber in them and are a good constipation remedy (hence the "regularity" you mention):

Good to keep in mind if one ever becomes, um, irregular  ;)

I've never noticed that, but then I never really know what my crazy body is going to do.  I know if I'm having problems, lots of grapefruit does the trick.

I've noticed this. When I was a kid we used to get walnuts in the winter all the time... I always figured it was normal, but never asked.

I think all nuts pretty much do that, but walnuts especially.

And for me, sugar too (?).

I think I'm currently in the situation where I might need to eat a few walnuts.
Does anyone know any other foods that have a similar result?

OK....I'm chiming in on this one....

I don't really know of any particular foods to help "get things moving", but I do have a few questions.

When exactly is a person considered regular or not?  I'm mean everyone's digestive track and metabolic rate is different.  So, three times a day for someone vs. once every 2-3 days could be regular for another.

Since going veg, let's just say that things move a lot move....easily and often for me.  I figured that most veg*ns wouldn't have a problem with this???  ::)

Baypuppy, you seriously crack me up! First digging around in vaginas, now kicking the poo factory into gear...If I'm ever in your neck of the woods, we should get together and talk openly about bodily functions--no shame! I wish my friends would write me a poem about poo  ;D A friend of a friend wrote a song once called "Girls Poo Too" that was kind of punk-rockish...all I remember is "Girls poo too. Yes they do. And so do you!" with lots of head banging.

I remember that my mom would make us eat bananas if we were having poo problems when we were little--I have distinct memories of either myself or my brother on a potty chair (well, poo chair in this case, I guess) munching on a banana. Pretty sure bananas don't get things moving THAT fast, but nonetheless...

Here the standard remedy is a soupspoon full of olive oil before breakfast. If you can choke it down! You can and should drink a big glass of water after. Strong espresso in the morning helps too.

The funny thing is, as a veghead I eat a lot of fibre and yet this week things kind of backed up on me, I ended up taking an herbal laxative that I keep around for emergencies. I think since there's been a lot of stress around I haven't been drinking enough water because Saturday I woke up with severe edema...like, I couldn't get my tennies on hardly.I knew things were wrong because also I felt very sluggish and unwell, all those toxins when you're not used to them.
As to what is regular, I'm usually every day, in the morning. If I have to pay another visit in the evening it means I'm having anxiety and insomnia is on the way.

In the States my mother always pushed apples as the miracle fruit and here in Spain they are considered "astringent" (ie constipating), I think because of the pectin. Who knows.

On the subject of apples...back in my pekoe tea drinking days (and this has been many years ago), if I had a cuppa and an apple, it was a "moving experience" without fail. I don't know whether it was coincidental, but I noticed the phenom more than once.

Nuts sometimes have that effect for me but not always. Perhaps it's the kind of nuts and how many. The oil in the nuts may have something to do with it, in addition to the fiber. I would think you don't usually eat enough nuts at one time (unless you are eating them at a party, for example) for the fiber to do the trick by itself.

I usually have them on wholegrain toast for breakfast. If ever I eat honey it is on "walnut toast". Maybe it's the honey+nut combination...

I am so glad someone besides me brought up this topic! I have been slightly worried about myself, as I have become VERY regular. If I don't go 2 times a day, its strange. Usually its 3 or even 4. Its super quick (hardly any time to read! ;D) and very clean, and my body has trained itself to only have the urge at home  ::).

I had learned when I was a kid that a "healthy" poop is one that is solid and floats. I hope this is not true, because mine are just the opposite of that.  ???

I know when I was omni, I didn't go everyday, or even every other. I was a super unhealthy eater though. Then when vegetarian, once per day at the same time. Now, as vegan (pretty darn healthy eater), see above!

I guess I am worried because I thought maybe my vitamins and minerals were not being absorbed and everything was just going right through me. Could this be the case?  I trust you guys more than my doctors, that's for sure!

Sorry if this is TMI!!!!

Mine would never hold the shape!  That is so hilarious. Definitely a gift for my brother this year when he turns 40. Thanks!

huhh, i was watching HOUSE once and a vegan couple came in because she was concerned that his poop was "floating" and House said it was floating because it had a lot of fat in it because he had been "cheating" and eating meat/dairy (a lot of fat).

however, my friends (well, not really "friends") over at the PoopReport says that it is air/gas in the poo. this is an interesting link because it does talk about veg*n diet and poop:

http://www.poopreport.com/Doctor/Content/float.html

actually, this is a better page about poop: http://www.heptune.com/poop.html

\
I guess this could explain it.....I mentioned earlier in the TVP/gas post that I RARELY have gas anymore (and I miss it!)

I couldn't get the heptune site to come up-well, I only waited about 6 seconds and then got impatient..... :-*

Can prune jiuce help with irregularity? Or even hot prune juice? That's what my mom used to give me when I couldn't exactly... go poop. Or even prunes? Prunes definitely taste better than the prune juice and also help!

Its so funny too that we're talking of this subject and there's an ad on this page abut free shipping on "DualAction Cleanse"! Maybe that could help!?  :D

stewed prunes for sure. they help, believe me.

I should have some on hand, just in case I'm feeling... a little plugged.

Coffee/espresso does help, but only because it's a hot liquid.  Any hot liquid will do -- tea, hot water, etc.  When I wake up in the morning I sip hot water while checking my email... soon enough, the magic happens.
