Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

I think you will like it--it doesn't taste like mango--the mango just sweetens it up! This stuff really is fantastic! Try making it once and see how you like it!

I've heard the idea of eating in 1/3 before--but then I get conflicting information about nuts--it is all very frustrating, I think in the end, you just need to figure out how you can eat healthy for yourself by expermenting with your diet--which makes sense since we are all so very different. I think for me I am just so very frustrated with weight fluxuation--if I could just get my body and mind to work together and stay at one specific weight I wouldn't care what I eat (as long as it was vegan of course), it's the 10 lbs of flux that breaks me over and over again! *sigh*

Ok then....Storm what is your mango chili sauce?

I don't actually get the credit for the mango chile sauce.  It came from goneraw.com and here it is:

Sweet Chili Sauce

1 red bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1 ripe mango, cut in chunks
1 small hot red pepper, such as tabasco or thai, minced (could use dry red pepper flakes)
10 dates, stoned and coarsely chopped (I used 5 dates and 5 prunes)
8 large cloves garlic, pressed
1 tsp. fresh grated ginger root (I used more)
1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. salt

Put all ingredients in food processor and puree, but stop it before it goes to liquid.

My home computer was a total rock this weekend so I haven't posted for a couple of days.  We moved a load of crap to the new house in St. Pete on Saturday and went down to the open market for a while.  I had some awesome raw pizza.......it makes me want an Excalibur so I can make decent sized pizza crusts.  You just can't do that on a doughnut shaped dehydrator!  We stopped by Whole Foods on our way home and got some raw guacamole, grape tomatoes, sprouted legumes, green chiles, pineapple, blackberries, nectarines, and carrots.  I suffered my first craving for non-raw food in weeks while watching my daughter eat a small chocolate lava cake she got there.  I wanted it soooooo badly!  It's kind of weird too, because I don't really have a sweet tooth.

Thanks Storm....I'll have to try that some time.
I have had a look around goneraw.com, but I think like others I find it a bit difficult on the old navigation.  I also tend to be someone who will want to browse recipes, not with anything particular in mind, so it's not the best site for me.

I'll have to have another look round there though to see if anything appeals.

BP--that trail mix stuff did look good! I'm going to try it soon :)

Hmm--avocado, mango, sprouts--sounds like you have the good makings of lettuce wraps! I would throw in hot pepper in there!

Oh! I'll borrow your "little beast" tee hee hee--just ship it on out here and I'll get it back to you in a few months *lol*

4 tiers sounds pretty good for 1 person--my ronco has 5 tiers and I think I just about only ever use 3 at the most. I'm going to have to do a search!!

*smooch*

There are a ton of dehydrators on ebay...it seems like there might be some really good deals. :)

My Nesco came with five trays, but I bought 4 more plus 8 Teflex sheets so as much as I'd like to trade up, I'm not likely to anytime soon....I've invested too much in the Nesco.  I'm a "heavy user" so I needed the extra trays.

WTF, baypuppy??  :o Obviously not for the raw foodist!

Oh yes! I've seen schematics online for cardboard, solar powered dehydrators! They looki like a great little gizmo for warm, sunny climates--not so efficient for Michigan though...

So, I made stuffed peppers from rawguru.com last night and they were really good.  What I don't get about so many posted raw recipes is why they use dry spices/ingredients that are easily obtained in fresh form.  This called for cayenne powder, basil, oregano, garlic, and paprika all in dry form.  Why?  The only one I didn't have fresh was the paprika.  I used all fresh herbs, fresh garlic and a fresh red chile pepper and it came out pretty damned good!  Dry spices......blech!  Dry is a last resort.

storm, those look great! i'm jealous you live in a warm state. i can't get much of anything outside winter veggies on my budget these days. except avocados have been mad cheap (under a dollar). but fresh herbs? jealousy!!

I grow my own most of the time, though I've let things go due to the move.  I only have basil, Greek oregano, rosemary and chives right now.  I feel so badly for you guys in the snowy states.  I thought you'd at least be able to get fresh in the store.

i can but it is really $$$$

sometimes i get some cilantro but bazil i can't afford (its like 3 bucks for a little package!--maybe 1/4 cup pressed in) regardless of the time of the year.

DR and I are planning on tossing seeds into our yard this spring and just gorilla gardening some herbs. landlord never mows it except for like 2 times in the summer, so we can get away with it :) but i'll prob put them in big pots and let them go. i can't wait until i have a place were i can grow stuff.

Yeah, I plan to start gardening too because herbs are way too money.... not much of a green thumb, but might as well start. I am however trying to stock pile some canned food as food prices may go way higher, or if there's another Great Depression-esque recession...however I have nowhere enough food...i've heard big-box stores like Costco have implemented rice limits like you only buy 1 50lb bag or something.....

guerillia gardining is the shit! I know of people who randomly plant seeds, plants, etc., in unused alley's, abandoned property, etc.! There is a whole culture behind it too--a lot like the freegan culture--I think it is very proper!

I want to attempt a raw rosewater cheesecake tomorrow and am working on the recipe now. Is vanilla extract considered raw since they probably cook the alcohol?  Sorry for my cluelessness. ???

I never heard of that before.  That is awesome!  ;D  I love to plant and grow but always end up with extra seeds since I have such limited space here.  Some guerilla gardening may be in order this spring....
