Raw Chit-Chat!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!
I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?
Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?
OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

Heyhey I would like to be more raw, I eat a lot of whole bulk grains currently...
I was reading that I can use my pre/unmilled grains just by soaking overnight.
And let stand for a few days to create a oat yogurt.
What other tips do you all have?
:)>>>

Let stand, as in let stand at room temperature and little bacterias will do their thing? I've never heard of that.

yes ma'am http://rawveg.info/oatyogurt.html
I don't know about that "oatyogurt" *lol* but we are very happy to have you Kannas!! I like to eat raw-steelcut oats for breakfast--all I do is add a bit of water to them plus some blueberries and agave and let them sit overnight in my dehydrator! The next morning they are warm and yummy!!!
What kind of *tips* are you looking for K?
Hi Capture,
I dont know what I am looking for... a lot of the recipes I saw included avocados.
While I love them to death, I cant eat them at every meal.
I am soaking overnight steel cut oats, quinoa and chickpeas.
Hmmm off the top of my head, some times I want a warm meal... raw dosent seem to provide this.
However I made nori rolls (avo, zucchini, carrot, jalapeno, sunflower seeds and tahini) this evening and they were quite satisfying.
Can I still do soup as long as its not over 116'F?
Same with tea? I have my thermometer out 8)
Can I do anything with rice?
I am excited for kelp noodles!
Ive been lazy all day but I am wired right now!
I am soaking overnight steel cut oats, quinoa and chickpeas.
Can you just soak steel cut oats and eat them? I lovez me some steel cut oats but I didn't realize you could do that. They won't sit in your stomach like an un-digestible ball of death? They aren't really, really chewy? I'm intrigued.

I wouldn't have thought they'd get soft enough. Maybe I'll try some in an experiment. On a weekend so if it upsets my stomach I won't be at work.

I think or understand that cooking for 20minutes is just an expedited way of getting them to soak up water.
Pressure cooker vrs simmer vrs soaking over night? All equal similar results?
bananas really thicken up smoothies if you don't like how thin they are without soymilk.
I do this with avocados since I don't like bananas.
Hey Kannas! I looove your enthusiasm!
OK--Rice is not raw--even so called raw wild rice is not raw. Some raw foodist claim that it is because it appears to "sprout" but it doesn't. Quinoa is definitely raw and the best sub for rice--although, I personally HATE quinoa--but I won't bother to rant about that now..
You can absolutely do soup! I like to make tomato soup with a blend of fresh and sun dried tomatoes and then let it warm up on my dehydrator--add in a little cajun pepper and it will really warm you up!!
Yeah--I see a billion and ten recipes with avo too--I just try to limit myself a few a week--it can be hard since avo is such a good base for dressings and soups. It's also a good idea to go easy on nuts--it's odd, but a lot of raw stuff is heavy on fat--nuts, seeds, avo, EVOO are Fat-City!
I believe you can buy raw tea--but for me personally--no one can take my tea away from me and that is just a non-raw thing I have in my diet--no ifs, ands, or buts!! My tea is MY TEA!
I pretty much say this to every new person on this thread so forgive me if you have already heard it--
Raw is totally a personal journey, there are no hard and fast rules--you can be as raw or as cooked as you like! Take it as far as you want to go whether you are looking to add in a few raw meals a week, try to be 50/50 raw/cooked or amp all the way up to 100% raw! If you haven't already--check out www.goneraw.com they have a ton of recipes and you will see that not all of them abide by 100% raw etiquette. They also have a "dead list" of items you will have to decide for yourself as to whether you want to include in your raw journey. I think the list is really helpful!

They're great soaked overnight! I eat them this way all the time--actually, I've never eaten steel cut any other way! I really like them a lot, I'm still trying to figure out the perfect water to oats ratio though--but that's part of the fun!

Hmmm ok. That would certainly make things easier on some mornings. I'm gonna try that tonight. What is a good ratio to start with?

I rinsed mine, check about four hours later added some water and will do the same before I head to bed.
I suppose they will soak for more like 12 hours come to think of it.
I read you can toss them into a processor or blender to mush a bit more after soaking.
Its really interesting. I am captivated.
A few pages back I was asked about my high price produce.
There is no co op or farmers market here.
Yes there is still cheap apples. I can only eat so many of them.
Usually eating two a day now.
When I leave work tomorrow I am going to check the market down the road they usually have affordable produce.
If not I can wait till Tuesday where I know there is economical market along my route.
I have some raw granola and it does not taste good. Tastes stale so I will have to remember where I got that at.
Was eating tahini out of the container earlier wow that stuff tastes good first bite after that Way to Bitter.
yes ma'am http://rawveg.info/oatyogurt.html
That's so cool! I kinda want to try it, but I'm afraid it would go bad and turn into a moldy pile of goo.
(and...I'm only 23...not really "ma'am" old...right?)
eta: replace "kinda" with "really"--I'll have to look for some oat groats next weekend when I go shopping again!
Capture I have not had any tea since before Thanksgiving.
I just pulled out some tonight and had a cup.
Forgot how much I missed tea.
Did not want to waste it since I have so much.
So I guess I am now up to water, juice and tea

I think I usually do 1/2 a cup of each and toss in some berries and agave--I dont even bother to check on it--it's usually justfine in the morning and even if it's not I eat it anyways...
Hehe, this is not exactly raw-related, but Capture your avatar pic reminds me of Kendra Wilkinson-- I think she's really pretty, so I hope you take that as a compliment! ;)

oh my! Well...she is a pretty girl--I don't happen to be endowed with her shapliness...but I appreciate you think she is pretty and that I remind you of her--*that's a weird sentence* I don't think the Heff would ever be interested in me though :P

Yeah...I need to lose about 20lbs and get implants...
Sooo Capture's winning the sexy vegetarian next door comp...?
Day one report of my oat soaking: I think I have a little too much liquid in the batch, no worries I am going to extend the experiment to the oat yogurt phase. I am enjoying a bowl of soaked steel cut oat soaked for 12hours overnight in a warm place, I tossed the batch into my processor to get it to a smoothie consistency added a tablespoon of hemp seed oil and some raw sugar. I am surprised that it tastes bright and sweet.
