Road Bike

What are some good beginners road bikes that would last awhile (like 2 years or so)? I'm gettin' tired of driving my car everywhere and burning tons of gas  :-\

Thanks!

Whats your commute (intended uses) and price range?
Craigslist and searching ebay for local has always been good to me.

I used to buy bikes at the local thrift stores and fix them, if needed, and then resell them. It was amazing the quality i could buy for less than 25 dollars. People are always buying them with the idea of getting exercise and then finding out they didn't like riding so after setting them unused in the garage for a couple of years they just give them away. Many times they are just like new!

I'd like a bike for plain city riding, to and from work, etc... for around $100 (or less of course)
but I too, don't know where to begin... when I go on craigslist, I'm not sure and I'm 5 foot, so I'm always scared it'll be too tall for me...

probably about 10-15 miles at the max. im gonna check out ebay and i got a buddy that fixes up bikes and rents them for like 3 bucks a day at her school. She said she might hook me up with one!

as far as price range goes im looking at 250-300 at the most, which is reeeally cheap for a road bike but maybe ill get lucky and come across a nice used one

$250-300 should get you rolling with a decent road bike.
I would stick with used, but keep in mind what you can get new.

I forgot you are in CT, I grew up there and my friend and I are always talking bikes and emailing each other links.
$70 is good if you dont have to put anything into it.
I'd try to talk him down to $50  or less cash.
I owned a Motobecane they are decent, just not up to date.
But for rolling around town you'll be fine. Point A to B right?
Bank on buying a lock, tubes, pump, tires.... and possibly a tune up around fall.

Eric, if you had say a $600 budget what road/touring bike would you recommend from that website.

Uses would include commuting, weekend road trips and possible long distance carrying kit?

List a few that you know are good bikes as I am not familiar with many of the brands they sell. I currently have a 20 year old Giant Mountain bike but would like to pick up some speed and head out on the road.

performancebike.com also had some goods deals, looking through the other day.
