movie reccomendations?

so the BF and i will be living together for about a week starting Friday night (house sitting) and he wants to watch a movie. All the movies i have, we have watched. And even though i'm 22 i am still a child at heart and love all the animated and disney stuff, but he is not for that, even though he's 21... (he acts like he's 40 already jeez... men...  ::) )

has anyone seen any DVD movies that they really loved lately? i haven't seen anything good come out lately that i would wanna watch except Music & Lyrics but he kinda sneered at that suggestion, and the same reaction when i suggested Pan's Labyrinth.

so any suggestions? thanks in advance (cuz i gotta go to work now lol)

What's your violence tolerance.  I love Rambo:  First Blood.  I like the wet. lush scenery and then there's action but much less overt violence than the other Rambo movies.

How about Little Miss Sunshine--funny, quirky, hip. A little something for everyone.

what a great movie. I know a few people who absolutely hated it though. weird...

or you could rent Ichi The Killer!

Ichi the Killer - I hadn't heard of the movie before, and I love foreign films, so I had to look it up.

Filmmaker Takashi Miike takes inspiration from Hideo Yamamoto's manga (cartoon), Koroshiya 1, to tell this bloody and bleak tale about the Japanese yakuza (organized crime). Blond-coiffed Kakihara's "mentor in crime" disappears, and Kakihara vows to find out who's responsible. He's also on the lookout for Ichi, a sadistic killer who may be able to inflict the level of pain Kakihara so badly craves.

Is this a well-filmed martial arts movie?

Give up on movies.  Play video games instead.  Or cards.  Or board games.  Sorry, but this sounds exactly like what my ex and I went through at the video store, which is a part of why he's the ex.  I mean, he couldn't just shut up and watch 1 freakin movie that I was interested in?

it's okay i'm starting to give up on movies as well. we go through it when we go to the video store, never can figure out anything to watch. i might just make him watch Catch Me If You Can though, i watch enough of his dumb home remodeling shows.

and speaking of shutting up, he doesn't shut up lol. he talks through everything, which i love him for because i like that he loves talking to me, but sometimes i just want to hear what's going on in the movie/tv show/news ;)

My Summer Of Love  -- he doesnt want to watch lesbians  ::)

Gee, I thought guys liked that!  ;) :D

so did i ;)

Loved, loved, loved Little Miss Sunshine. Alan Arkin stole the show. Had me laughing hysterically.

Ichi the Killer sounds good, but a bit violent. How about one of Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy...clean, wholesome fun for the whole family.  ;D ;D ;D (Just kidding! Polar opposite of a Disney film.)

Sareia, your boyfriend probably won't like this one, but you might like it if you haven't seen it yet: Spirited Away

it's really violent and disturbing ala takashi miike. i've seen many martial arts films that are better, but Ichi left an imprint in my brain! i don't think i will ever forget the feeling i had when i first saw this

So I guess I would be the wrong one to ask...I never buy a DVD unless I'm "friends" with the film already. And I watch them even after I've memorised most of the script!
He would probably be the wrong person to invite to watch Vanya on 42nd Street, a minimalist production of Uncle Vanya that was made way before they restored the theatre which is now part of the Disney kingdom...and used it as was....I Love that movie!
Ah well, my DVDs are kinda like family....watching them is like going to visit friends. (I'm agoraphobic, I don't get out much...)

I don't know if these fit into your preferences, but a few random titles that come to mind that I find can be watched more than once:

The Last Emperor (a true story of China's last emperor during the transition to communism)
The Fugitive (with Harrison Ford - a rare case when the remake was better than the original - good action movie)
Chariots of Fire (this is slow moving, but a beautiful film, and a true story)
Babe (okay, he probably won't watch it, but it's a great movie!)
The Joy Luck Club (tho some might call it a "chick flick" it also has excellent historical and cultural "color" great acting, cinematography, etc - much of it filmed on location in China)

If I think of any others, I'll post them later.

I don't think that this has been mentioned yet, but it may be a good compromise. Check out anything by Hayao Miyazaki .Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind are the ones that I have seen, and all are amazing. They are animated and have the child-like quality to them, but they deal with heavy issues and can definitely be appreciated by adults on many levels. They are also very environmental, socially-conscious, have strong female leads, etc. Very good movies.

I totally agree.  I would add Kiki's Delivery Service.  Kiki and Nausicaa are my favorites. Watch them in the original Japanese with subtitles.  Dubbing takes a lot away from the movie, IMO.

Has anyone seen last yr's "Beowulf and Grendel"? The copy I borrowed had no subtitles and for once I could have used them. The photography was great but they played fast and loose with the story and the cutting was confusing. If you haven't read it, you won't get it, and if you have, you won't recognise it. Any other opinions?

I honestly could not understand ONE WORD they were saying throughout the whole entire movie (no subtitles either). I started to give up about half way through, and just decided to enjoy watching Gerard Butler instead. I really looked forward to seeing this movie, too. I like Stellan Skarsgard. Oh well.

oooooops i forgot constantine and the machinist. is the movie that you're talking about shaolin bunny in french?

Sadly no. It was in English from what I remember, but everyone had super thick accents. Norse accents? And in a age old dialect it seemed (okay, I confess--I never read the book!! I was supposed to in high school, but I didn't). I'm a moron. I don't know. I'm sure Yabbit could explain how they spoke. They could have been speaking French; it would have made no difference to me.

I like The Machinist. Christian Bale! So skinny in that movie though. He was great in Equilibrium, too. And, how could I ever forget, American Psycho!

Man, this thread makes me feel at home. I am such a movie buff!

Children of Men is great. I'm not sure why it didn't have more buzz surrounding it when it came out. It was easily one of the ten best films of 2006

My husband and I recently watched The Station Agent and both enjoyed it a lot.

I second this movie. It's a very quirky movie. If you're the type of person who befriends misfits, this is the movie for you to watch. I liked the interaction between Peter Dinklage and the young guy who works at the food stand. The movie has a lot of humorous moments.

Also, I was thinking that some of you who like darker, mysterious, gothic-y, thriller-type, romantic stuff, these older movies might suit your tastes:

The Ghost and Mrs Muir (one of my most favorite movies)
Spiral Staircase
Portrait of Jenny
Seance on a Wet Afternoon
Laura
Rebecca
Gaslight

Topper, Canterbury Ghost, Blithe Spirit, and My Favorite Wife are all lighthearted comedies about ghosts. Very cute stuff.

Edit: Gotta also recommend The Lion in Winter (!!!) for anyone who enjoys really good dialog, witty banter, and evil family intrigue! (Speaking of evil family intrigue--try Curse of the Golden Flower--this is a movie that came out last year by the Chinese director who did Hero and House of Flying Daggers--all really, really beautiful movies. Curse of the Golden Flower had a few real cornball moments and is highly dramatic, but oh so much fun to watch!)
