Movies in General

The Juno thread inspired me to start a thread about movies - what have you seen lately, what's good, what's bad, what do you recommend, etc. This may be especially fun what with awards season on the horizon - what's going to take home the gold this year?

Well, I already talked about Juno, so I'll mention the last movie I saw before that - Sweeney Todd. It was really good and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good musical and especially to anyone who likes Tim Burton.

As far as awards season, I think the best film I saw last year as far as quality was Into the Wild. While not perfect, it was a great story and beautifully filmed. Long, but worth the journey. A close second is Lust, Caution. Ang Lee is such a great storyteller and this film proves it further. Another great movie was Once - highly recommended for music lovers of any kind!

Ha!  I haven't seen any new movies for a long time.  I'm still crazy about High Fidelity.  And Pushing Tin.  And Since You've Been Gone.  And Eternal Sunshine.

I saw Sweeny Todd! I loved it, I really like musicals/Tim Burton/Johnny Depp/cannibalism - so it worked for me.

And I saw that one with the polar bears fighting....fell asleep....sounded good

Hey, if you liked Eternal Sunshine ... the director (Michel Gondry) has a new movie coming out in February called Be Kind Rewind with Jack Black. It looks very funny and unique.

Fee, are you talking about The Golden Compass? I vowed never to see that movie the minute the talking polar bear showed up in the preview.

The last movie I saw was Bourne Ultimatum.  I really liked it and couldn't wait to see it after the first two.  I hope they eventually do more.

I might be the only person on the planet that didn't like Sweeney Todd. The only one.

So far, I think Little Miss Sunshine is my favorite, though it's not recent.

Those movies are based on the Bourne novels, of which there are only the three, by Robert Ludlum.  Much better than the movies, though I enjoyed the first two.

FSR- thanks!  I'll have to look for that!

I watched "I Am Legend" at work the other night...it was far less horrible than I had expected, although still not very good.

1.5 out of 5

will smith is still annoying, go read the book...its a million times better

I'm a movie buff. I am going to see There Will Be Blood tonight. I've read the book and enjoyed it, though I've heard the film is only loosely based on the book (which is probably a good thing). Tomorrow I'm going to see The Diving Bell & the Butterfly or The Orphanage.

The last movie I saw was Juno, which I reviewed in the Juno thread. I saw August Rush , or is it september rush? either way, it was garbage. Really sappy, predictable movie with subpar character development and a really rowdy Robin Williams. Kerri Russell cannot act to save her life.

I also have three movies at home from netflix right now:
Killer of Sheep
Manufactured Landscapes
Treasure of the Sierra Madre

will report back

oh, i barely ever watch movies, mainly because there isn't a whole lot that is worth 2 hours of my time, but i was just talking about how i think high fidelity is one of my favorites ever! this is partially because john cusak is in it and he is a god. plus, the female lead is totally hot, PLUS, it is based on an awesome book. damn, i mean really... you can't get much better.

also, waking life isn't very popular, but it rules.

I've struggled to watch movies lately (meaning years).  Ever since the days of Shakespeare in Love, Memento, Mulholland Dr. and the like I haven't really seen anything that is even close to the quality, creativity, and writing as those three movies.....any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I watched some movie last night, but I can't remember the name......Defiance, Ohio? with Woody Harrelson. It was good. I went to see I am Legend...not the best movie. I watched the Waterhorse. That was good too. Eternal Sunshine is great!

Considering that the movies basically have little in common with the books except for the character names it wouldn't surprise me if more movies were made.  Personally, I found the books a little hard to follow since they jump around so much making it difficult to keep track of who's doing what.  We're opposite in which is better...books or movies.  Another author has written 2 sequels (not that I've read them) ...

Sequels to Ludlum Books
The Bourne Legacy (by Eric Van Lustbader) (2004)
The Bourne Betrayal (by Eric Van Lustbader) (2007)

Hum. Eternal Sunshine? Naw, too confusing. Too intellectual for mee, drunk or otherwise. Little Miss Sunshine? Yeh, pretty funny and lifelike. The demented van-horn made my day.  ::) ::) ::)

It's been a long while between me & other movies....... If you haven't seen any of the last few month's films, you're OUT OF THE LOOP. Unless you go out of your way to find some previews, you don't know what's coming up. (Unless you watch crap free-TV, which I don't.) I've been out o' the loop for a long while .

However, my folks and I went to see The Golden Compass on New Year's Eve. I LUVS the books by Phillip Pullman, he's so talented. I still like the first book more than the film, but seeing the film and actors and scenery they used for it helped me visualise the story. They done well.

I hope they continue to do MORE for the rest of the trilogy.
I don't care much aboot any other films lately, of which I've heard.  :P

I pretty much stick to the movies I have at home.  I'm too cheap to pay theatre prices very often.  I'd rather buy so I can watch them over it I want.

I'm one of the few people in the world (with Heliamphora) who thought Eternal Sunshine was just.....meh.

Also, I FUCKING HATED The Notebook.  With a seething passion.  Totally unbelievable characters, transparent plot, and just dumb in general.  So take that nyah!  Not that anyone mentioned the Notebook, but just saying....Punchdrunk Love was another hated movie.  Oh!  Oh!  Ichi the Killer!  All time WORST WORST movie.

Um...good movies though?  These are ones that I have seen lately (within the past year) but that are not necessarily new.

The Magician (Australian movie, cast of 3, really good)
The Departed
La Vie en Rose (about Edith Piaf, and the actress who played her aged REALLY well)
The Vengeance Trilogy (Korean: Old Boy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, but mostly Old Boy)

And I like Horror too, so:
Wolf Creek
The Descent

Also, has anyone seen 'What Dreams May Come' with Robin Williams?  Holy bat tears, I cried buckets when I watched that.

Please report back on There Will be Blood! I've been hearing good things so I'm interested, but I just have a hard time taking it seriously because of the title. That sounds more like the title for the new Rambo movie coming out. ;D Oh, and everyone, I have a question. Regarding the poster below...

http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/artman2/uploads/1/therewillbeblood.JPG

...am I the only one who thinks he's the spitting image of Dr. Phil?

I also want to see Atonement. I waiver between liking and hating Keira Knightley so hopefully this will be a "like" movie (I think the only movies she annoys me in though are the Pirates ones).

Yes!!  AND... the "vegan" stickers littering the store!!  Yay!

I need to read the book though.

True.  I didn't like the movies because they were so different from the books.  I liked the jumpiness.  The main character has no memory of his previous life, so it "felt right".    I didn't know about the newest sequels.  I probably won't read them, though.  I get annoyed when another author takes over a series.

I think he looks more like the sheriff from Deadwood to me

Oh, and Old Boy is a pretty amazing movie

Lets see, what to recommend

The Proposition (australian western)
Pans Labrynth (must see if you havent seen it)
Hot Fuzz was pretty funny
Sicko was amazing
American Gangster was really good (not godfather good or goodfellas good, but pretty good)
28 weeks later was suprisingly good as well
Black Sheep was pretty funny in a cheesy horror way

did anyone see 11th hour?

I agree AB, that Punch Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine were overrated
