Movies in General

The Juno thread inspired me to start a thread about movies - what have you seen lately, what's good, what's bad, what do you recommend, etc. This may be especially fun what with awards season on the horizon - what's going to take home the gold this year?

Well, I already talked about Juno, so I'll mention the last movie I saw before that - Sweeney Todd. It was really good and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good musical and especially to anyone who likes Tim Burton.

As far as awards season, I think the best film I saw last year as far as quality was Into the Wild. While not perfect, it was a great story and beautifully filmed. Long, but worth the journey. A close second is Lust, Caution. Ang Lee is such a great storyteller and this film proves it further. Another great movie was Once - highly recommended for music lovers of any kind!

Di, for another decent Joaquin Phoenix mafia movie, you should check out The Yards. It's not the greatest movie but it has a good story and great acting - it also stars Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, and Faye Dunaway. I thought it was pretty amusing that both Phoenix and Wahlberg made another crime movie together this past year (We Own the Night).

My favorite Joaquin Phoenix movie hands-down though is Quills. Fantastic all around. I can't believe Geoffery Rush lost to Russel Crowe that year at the Oscars. It is a movie about the Marquis de Sade. He is staying in an asylum but continues publishing stories by sneaking out his manuscripts to the laundress, played by Kate Winslet. Joaquin Phoenix plays the priest running the asylum and Michael Caine plays this evil doctor who wants to shut the asylum down. It is not for the faint of heart but it is a great movie with a great story and cast.

Thanks so much for the suggestions.  I will have to rent Quills!

Thanks again.

Did they ever CG-out the boom mike that kept dropping into the frame when the Marquis was in his prison chamber.  When I watched in the movie in the theater, I saw it drop down five times.

I never noticed that. Maybe your theater just had a lousy print? I rememberI saw a really crappily-framed preview for Margot at the Wedding where the aspect ratio was way off and you could see all of the boom mikes. Someone was asleep at the projector.

Do not watch Zoo, it made me feel sick to my stomach.  It was beautifully done, and not too graphic, but the concept of man-horse love is too much for me.

Yeah, I saw this at the local indie theatre and it was kind of extreme. I think I'm desensitized to weird sexual endeavors (2girlsonecup, tubgirl, goat.se, etc) so it wasn't too weird for me since they didn't show anything. It made me feel really uneasy though

You had to go and bring two girls one cup into this?  Shudder.  I guess i am a wimp.
The movie disturbed more on the level that these men seemed to justify what they were doing since the horse "initiated it".  I wasn't planning on watching it, but my friend was going to get Ice Spiders if I didn't act fast.  Perhaps I wasn't emotionally prepared to watch it.

There was a fairly recent (about 2 years ago) news story in Belgium, where a guy was found to be having sex with his dog, only when questioned (by the police), he claimed that the dog initiated it.  That she wanted it, and gave him looks, etc.

What kind of sick fuck is that, now really.  Only get this:  It's NOT illegal to have sex with animals in the Netherlands. There is even a political party (The Charity, Freedom and Diversity party, or NVD) that is fighting for the right to keep it legal (as well as sex with 12 year olds- totally not making this shit up).

Ah , anyway, back to movies.

I saw 'The Kite Runner' last night.  I think it was done very true to the book, but for some stupid reason, I wasn't expecting it to be mostly in Farsi (DUH, Amanda!) and so spent a lot of time trying to translate from the Dutch subtitles for my boyfriend (no English subtitles over here obviously).  Aand also putting in a bit of background story from the book for him.  I probably should have just seen it on my own.

In any case, I thought it was good.

Unlike Atonement.  Thought the book was good, but the movie left a lot to be desired (you just can't visualise on screen what the author wrote about in the book, too deep, too emotional).  How did it win so many Golden Globes???

I mean, seriously, why did anyone let this guy make movies for so long? They ALL SUCKED! Nobody saw them and the director is a huge joke. It just pisses me off that pretty much every theater in my area is screening "In the Name of the King" and yet movies like Persepolis or There Will Be Blood haven't even opened here yet. I wish Werner Herzog would come kick this guy's ass.

Speaking of Werner Herzog, another great movie is Grizzly Man. It is a true story about a guy who spent 13 summers in a grizzly reserve filming the bears and learning about their habitats, and then during the rest of the year he would tour schools and take part in activism for the bears and other animals. Herzog made the film by assembling footage that the man made of the animals into a documentary, along with interviewing his friends and family. I highly recommend it!

It isn't illegal in Washington either.  The guy who ran the horse sex ring didn't charge $ for it, since that would be prostitution, and prostitution is wrong :P.  Actually it isn't illegal in a lot of states.  We have a law here in Orgeon, that you cannot leave your car door open for longer than necessary.  With so many dumb, frivolous laws, you would think bestiality would be illegal!

There's been at least 2 cases in the last few years in MI where men have been arrested and jailed for having sex with sheep.  I'm sure there's probably been more because there are some sick crazy bastards around here.  Those just came immediately to mind with your 2 posts.

:o  My curiosity got the better of me and I looked up the two girls movie.  :o :o :o  THANK GOD I didnt see a link to the video but instead a description of it, where my curiosity was immediately banished.

:-X  the horse "initiated it" = suchhh bullshit.  >:(

i saw this when it came out a couple of years ago!  the guy in the documentary was ... interesting, to say the least.  i second your recommendation!

re: sex with animals - apparently bestiality is legal here in florida, too - but hopefully not for long!  a couple weeks ago, a news story was circulating about a goat who was raped and strangled - and that's when the lack of bestiality law surfaced!  it's a sad story, but the current gov't officials say they're ready to add the law to the books.  GEESH!

To be honest, I'm kind of disappointed that 2girls1cup wasn't brought into this sooner

YES!  After watching this I really wanted to find all the hours of footage he filmed.  It would be very interesting to watch...

I was just talking about that movie the other day- "I'm touching her poo"
I heard the audio of his demise was on youtube, could be an urban legend, not too sure if I want to find out

My favorite scene was when he filmed that fox walking on top of his tent. Seeing the little paws in shadow was great!

sat and watched a bunch of movies yesterday.

Squid and the Whale. Hadn't seen it since it was released in theatres and I forgot just how good it is. Well deserving of all the award nominations it received.

Fellini Satyricon/ Well well well. Something tells me this didn't hit too many theatres in America due to its high homosexual content, namely the relationship between the grown men fighting over the "custody" of the young boy. Scantily clad men prance around in loin cloths as the main character embarks on a redemption mission. Out there, beautiful, slick, stylish. Fellini does it again.

Le Cercle Rouge My netflix cover says this movie is 'the epitome of cool' so naturally I had high hopes going into this one. A little long (though I didn't quite notice the length), but very well made. We start off with two stories that end up intertwining and two convicts get themselves into a whole heap of trouble. One of the best films I've seen from the 70's

Once was the last movie I got around to yesterday. An Irish folk quasi-musical about friendship and regrets. Surprisingly good music and the chemistry between the two main characters is fantastic. Very, very well done.

Agreed.  All the previews were like, "OMG THIS IS THE BEST ROMANTIC MOVIE EVER CREATED IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND."  I enjoyed it, but compared to the book, eh.

I just watched Paris, je t'aime, which was a cute little collection of short love stories by various French (and some not French) directors with a whole slew of famous actors.  I enjoyed it a lot.  Very well done.

I watched The History Boys today.  I didn't mean to have it in my Netflix queue, so I was a bit disappointed when it arrived, but it's a fun, small movie.  I'm going to watch it again before I return it.  I liked it that much.

I liked that one too!

my bf and I rent movies like there's no tomorrow, so I have seen too many good ones to know where to start..  randomly:

The Wind that Shakes the Barley - for those who love Cillian Murphy (I think he's a tad creepy) and/or a good Irish independence drama.

The Take - documentary about Argentine workers who occupied and reopened their factories after their bosses closed up shop and took off in 2001.

Over the Hedge - I loves me some cartoon animals who talk.  And this film has sooo many social commentary overtones - cooperation, anti-consumerism, etc.., it's fantabulous.

La Ley de Herodes, aka Herod's Law - Funny as hell Mexican pic from 2000 about politics, corruption, etc..

Sexo, Pudor y Lagrimas - Also Mexican, from like 1999 I think.. basically a long telenovela featuring Jorge Salinas before he got old and gross.

Abre los Ojos, Aka later remade into Tom Cruise's crapfest Vanilla Sky (I didn't have to see that version to know it sucked) - screws with your mind, I'll tell you that much.

Nicotina, the elusive 2003 Mexican movie that's out everywhere, but not due for US release until 2025, according to Amazon - but still available for pre-order.. hmph.  It's in the same vein as Amores Perros - multiple storylines revolving around one or two central points of convergence.

and of course, I'm a big fan of stupid, stupid humor such as: Old School, Dodgeball.. and the such.
