I agree. The late eighties-early nineties were the best years IMO, even better than the original cast. Dana Carvey, John Lovitz, Nora Dunn, Mike Meyers, Phil Hartman. The writing was much better then, too. I think (and I know some will disagree) that the show started to suck when Will Ferrell and the rest of that cast came on the scene.
I can't even watch it now. It's like the cast walks around with smirks on their faces because they think they're funny. They're not. I don't watch 30 Rock either because Tina Fey is the worst example of that type of smirking.
Oh, Phil Hartman. I miss him.
As far as the new cast... I don't watch the show. The few times that I have caught it, though, and saw Tina Fey, I didn't think she was too bad. But like I said, I've seen maybe a total of 15 minutes of the show over the past 5 years, so I'm not a good judge.
I loved Cheri O'Teri for some reason. (Female cheerleader to Will Ferrell's male cheerleader). She was funny in lots of skits.

I really liked Tina Fey on "Weekend Update," and she seems like a cool lady, but... That's about it. Not really a fan of her otherwise.
Also, in terms of who the best cast is, I really think it has to do with your age. (I'm tempted to say "generation," but I don't think the leap is even that large.) My parents were teenagers/early 20s in the late 1970s, and they think the original cast is the best. My older cousins were teenagers in the late-1980s, and they think the Jon Lovitz, Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, etc. cast was the best. I loved "SNL" when I was in middle school (which is the age when I watched it the most) in the mid- to late-1990s, and I think the Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer, etc. cast was the best. Just my two cents. :D (I do also love the seasons when Mike Meyers was a cast member. He was hilarious. Philip, the Hyper Hypo?? It doesn't get much better than that. ;D)
Oh--and I hate the current cast, except for Andy Samburg. I love his digital shorts! :D But I watch those online; it is embarrassing watching the show now. :'(
EDIT: My favorite sketch(es) of all time are the "Delicious Dish" one with Ana Gasteyer & Molly Shannon. It's probably because I love NPR & always notice how the commentators actually talk like Margaret-Jo & Terri... "Schweaty Balls" = ;D ;D ;D

I suppose for some people that's true. Not for me though. I was a teenager when the show started in 1975 and I loved the original cast but I think the two overlapping casts from the late eighties and early nineties surpassed them in every way. I continued to watch through the late nineties hoping against hope that they would improve but they just didn't.
By the way- I liked Ana Gasteyer but always found Molly Shannon rather annoying for some reason. She just really creeped me out.

Yes, agreed. I am creeped out by Molly Shannon in everything she does, except for some of her "SNL" skits. I do not really enjoy her when she guest stars on TV shows (I saw her in a rerun of "Will & Grace" last night; weird), or when she's in movies ("Superstar"). No, thanks. ;)
I never actually watched SNL on regular airings. What I do enjoy though are the Best of SNL DVD's my husband has. We own the Chris Farley, Adam Sandler and Will Farrell ones. Very funny stuff.
Though every Christopher Walken episode or skit I have seen was hilarious. From More Cowbell to Colonel Angus. Good stuff. Of course he always scares me cus I remember him from The Dead Zone movie.

JessaCita, you're probably right about SNL fave casts being a generational (or age) thing. I was in elementary school when the first season of SNL aired. My parents would let me stay up late every Saturday night to watch it. It was my favorite show at the time, and that cast will forever be my favorite. Each member was great in their own way. But I did love Dan Ackroyd the best. And for a short period of time I had a crush on Chevy Chase (back when he was actually somewhat funny...with all his pratfalls). The guests were great, too...Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, Al Franken, etc.
After that cast faded away I stopped watching regularly. But occasionally I would tune in because there were a few really funny cast members that would pop up here and there...Eddie Murphy (as Buckwheat/Gumby/Mr. Rogers/James Brown), Chris Farley (loved him), and Mike Meyers (brilliant!).
