Boot Camp (Let's make this a thread on accountability)

OK, I am going to measure and weigh myself on Saturday.  For those of you that said some of your summer goals were to lose weight and get fit....hope you will join this thread.

Not that I am going to post my weight and measurements but maybe I need to be accountable.

Sooooooo... I will make a comment on Saturday.  Then every Saturday, I am going to say weight lost and inches lost. (remember that if you gain muscle the scale will not move or go up.  Use a tape measure)

I truly am going to put myself through boot camp.  The program I have been watching on TV has shown that in 6 weeks with real effort, one can make a huge difference.

As well, I am going to comment each Saturday on how am reaching the goals I stated for the summer.

We all stated goals for the summer.  Let us all be accountable.  Some we will attain, some we may fall short on but lets all support each other.

When the fall officially starts (when the h*ll is that?), we can state what we actually achieved.

Sometimes our cyber friends are our best friends.  We are non judgemental and hugely supportive.

I know for me, the hugest thing is quitting smoking.

Next, getting fit and healthy.  One of my goals is to walk and hike with Cali more.  That will fall in to the get fit and healthy boot camp thing.

One was to spend more time with Biko.  I clip his wings in the summer, he prefers to walk anyway.  I will start taking him to the park on my walks with Cali.  That way he can feel he is a part of my life.

Spending more time with my BF.  He is hugely busy, I am hugely busy.  This is going to be a tough one.

De-cluttering....I am ready.  I want it done and I want it done now. I am finally so sick of the mess that I want to do it,  Get it done!

So guys, lets have a huge reach your summer goals support group.  No better place than this board.

Veg on...

Hmmm, do you have a specific goal?  I know that helps me a lot.  I know that if I don't go, I might not meet my goal.  Before I had one, I just went because I had this general sense that it would be worthwhile, but now I have a specific thing.
Also, could you get yourself some new music?  Or some good magazines to read?  Or try something new?  Take a class?

Hey, I just saw this comment, thanks for the tips. I don't have a goal, I just enjoy being healthier so I go to the gym.  And I did go on Monday night and did a 15 min cardio warm up and my upper body workout, and went last night and did a 15 min warmup and my leg workout, and it was all good. I mean, I've never actually not gone when I've felt like not going, so I think I'm doing ok without a goal, it's probably just the cold rainy weather, and the fact that I've been extremely lethargic, all the time, for the last four months can't be helping either.

Yeah, true.  That happens sometimes.  I'm glad it's going well!

Cheers :)

Also: Our gym only has four cardio machines, treadmill, bike, rowing machine, and what I know as a cross-trainer, but looks pretty much like what Shelloid described a while back as a treadclimber.. is either an elliptical or stair machine similar to that? or if not, what are they??

Cardio - 60 min:
- 20 min sprinting on treadmill
- 20 min elliptical (more moderate)
- 20 min stair machine (more challenging)

Elliptical is like this:

It has a running motion but is more low-impact.

Stair machine, my gym has two kinds:

This one is a rolling staircase (so challenging!):

This one just has like step pedal things (still challenging):

ahhhh. Thank you! I have seen so many different terms used, and in my head, I thought elliptical was another word for the cross-trainers we have, but, quite often, things in my head aren't actually in any way related to the real world. But now I know, and I think they are pretty much teh same.
But holy crap that stair thing looks frightening. I know many people have hurt themselves in treadmill accidents when the freaking thing is flat - I can't imagine how easy it would be to hurt yourself from the top of that thing!! On a side point, I see why you say it's challenging...

Yeah, I mean the stairs are pretty open, so yeah, you could fall easily.  They're great though.  I sometimes do them with two light weights in each hand (like do curls or whatever) to burn some extra calories and such.  So hard because then you can't hang on!  I think I'll do that tomorrow.  My sister says that satan invented the stairmaster, lol.

Plan for Wednesday:

Cardio:
20 min - scary stair machine w/ five pound weights
30 min - elliptical (moderate)
30 min - cross trainer* (moderate to challenging)

I put in more cardio time because I lost some yesterday.

Strength:
- I still need to do biceps and triceps from yesterday
- Lower body - I'll do hamstrings, quads, and the leg press.  Also lunges.

Abs:
- Sit-ups
- Some other junk, haven't decided yet.  Something for obliques.

That's a tough workout. Haha, I guess this is why you're shelloid's inspirational figure. : )

I'm in two minds as to whether to go to the gym today. I tend to only go three days a week, and I've done both my strength workouts already this week, so if I go, it'll be just for cardio/abs. And I don't know if I have the enthusiasm for that... hmm... fifteen minutes of work and an hour commute in which to decide though...

KMK, AC, westies, Shelloid...

You all are awesome!  I've been reading, but not posting since I've been uber lazy.  Vacation = lost motivation (but at least I was walking a TON)

I'm trying to lose 10 more pounds, but I'm stuck. :-\ Soooo.... I've started P90X!  Who's heard of it?  I've had friends do it with ammmmazing results!  I plan on posting the before and after pics in this thread when the 90 days are over. ^-^ Plus, I've been doing a lot of power walking in my ''fat burning'' zone 4-5 per week for an hour at a time.

Double Bonus:  DH is doing it with me and he never exercises.  AND!!  I got him to stop eating crappy fast food! ;)b Go me!!

Triple Bonus:  Bella is getting even more exercise due to the uber long walks on top of her normal running around, play dates, and trips to daycare.

woot, so I went.  Just did 15 minutes on the bike, a 2km row, and 15 minutes on cross-trainer, but I felt pretty good afterwards. And now I can go home straight after work tonight and get started on dinner earlier without feeling guilty, sweet. : )

I have a feeling I won't be posting in here too much over the next week - I have a crap excuse.....my lovely foot tattoo is quite painful when I wear tightish shoes - and my trainers are tight.
I also shouldn't go into a swimming pool for at least 2 weeks post tattoo.

Oooops!

I may go at the weekend and just do weights / ab stuff, just to keep me going a bit.

Shelloid,

Do you have a heart rate monitor?  Or can you borrow/check one out from somewhere?  You can still get a great fat burner workout in if you're able to keep your heart rate up in a circuit-type workout. ;)b Good luck!!

no I haven't got one and would have no idea wherre to borrow / buy one from.  TBH my foot is not too painful so I reckon by next week I'll be back at the gym (fingers crossed)

Shelliod,
How is your foot?  Back to working out??

Today is the last workout day of week 2 for P90X! ;) Which means I'm 2/9ths finished.  I've also cut my calories down to 1800-2000.... depending on whether or not I also run that day.  I've decided I'm not going to weigh myself until the 30 day mark.

How is everyone else doing??

I'm glad you posted!  Good job!

I'm doing so well!  I reached a new benchmark in my weight.  It's SO awesome--it's a place I haven't been for a while!  Yesterday, I worked my shoulders, chest, back, and triceps.  And I worked them good, too--I can feel it today.  Also I did my abs and my normal cardio.

Let's see, today I am going to New Haven for a long hike.  I will probably get vegan ice cream for lunch after because I just found out it exists in this town I'm passing through, but I've been eating really well so it's all good.  This evening I'll probably do Shred or Pilates or something to make up for the fact that I didn't go to the gym today.

I'm gonna come back later to plan tomorrow's workout.

YAY for you!!  Yeah, today is "Kenpo X"... which is this cardio/punch/kick workout type thingy.  Fun stuff.  Only bummer to the P90X is that I'm still paying for my gym membership for the next 3 months, but hardly using it.  I think I'm going to start mapping out weekly exercise programs which allow me to run, do P90X 6 days/week, and still hit the gym at least 3x/week so I just don't feel like I'm wasting my money.

 my foot is no longer sore at all but it has been crazy itchy for the past few days, so I haven't wanted to cover it with tight trainers.  BUT I will be back to working out as of tomorrow.  I should also be able to get back to aqua aerobics this week (I had to wait 2 weeks post tattoo before going in a pool)

So, basically I haven't worked out in 2 weeks!!! OMG!  However, I have reached a new low weight - not sure how  managed that, but I'm not complaining.
I'm really going to be trying extra hard over the next month or so - we will be booking our medicals for NZ immigration in August and so I want to be weighing as low as possible for that and make sure that all my bloods are in range (my cholesterol is borderline high).

right, so I'm heading out from work to go to the gym now, hoping it will make me feel a lot less bleugh by the time I get home... we'll see how that plan works out though...

i havent been to the gym since june 14thish.  i had an awful period for a whole week!!!  and then i had 3 weeks of vacation and then about another week of taking care of things here at home post vacation/laziness/more period goodness.  and now i'm ready to go back.  yay.  i think i'll start the couch to 5k program again from the start for the third time.  haha.

eta: so i just got back from the gym.  i've come to the realization that i will not be gaining or losing weight any time soon.  the whole time that i was exercising before vacation, i didnt lose any weight, i weighed myself today after a month off, i havent gained any weight.  weird.  but i could only do 10 minutes on the elliptical, took a 2 minute break then did 5 more minutes, then i did 10 reps on the cables before i started to feel nautious and yucky.  this was barely anything compared to what i was doing before vacation: 20 minutes on the treadmill, machine for 20-30 reps, 20 minutes on elliptical, machine for 20-30 reps, 20 minutes on bike.  well it just might take a little while to get back into things.

yeah, it kind of worked, I was feeling super sleepy when I got there, went for a ten minute run and woke up somewhat, and got through my upper body workout and made it home feeling very pleased that I'd been and much more alive than I have been the last few days for that time of night : )

So first day back at the gym.

Not as bad as I feared.  I managed:
15 mins on the treadclimber
10 mins on the elliptical cross trainer
3 sets of:  20 crunches, 15 sit up with 5kg weight, 20 russian twists, plank balanced on gym ball for slow count of 30, 10 pressups
2 sets of: 15 leg press (30kg), 15 shoulder pull down thingies - don't know what they're called! (25kg)
1000m rowing

I am pleased with myself.

eta: my foot was well itchy in my tight trainers :(
