No one ever does.
No like yours this is none of concern. But I'm the other half of the subject what dumb ass people. Go get a life. Imagine talking to someone and they are not speaking to you.

I think in addition to real home ec and shop classes, kids should have basic life skills training as well. What to do if your bank account is charged for something you didn't purchase, etc. etc. How to cope with landlords, and tenants rights. Basics on starting your own business. How to fill out college applications and financial aid. How to file taxes. What you should do in order to keep your important papers in order. Online common sense and safety. All that good stuff.

I think it's a very reasonable idea. In my senior year of high school I did not have a full schedule, and one of the classes I was taking was called Ren Prog...Renaissance Program..we were supposed to "change the school!" The entire year we had one assignment: make signs telling people to stay to the right on the stairs....we never did it. We did homework, played online games, made copies of various body parts in the office, but we never did anything useful. That time could have been better spent. I'm pretty sure every person that went to our school had time to take a class like that, or at least take it instead of art or P.E. I still don't know how to tell what's wrong with my car or how to do taxes.

i'm super sorry to be arguing about this (i think maybe everyone is ultra sensitive to arguments right now ::)) but, really? all of these things are very case specific. what people really need to know is how to be resourceful... i.e. how to use the local library, who to call, how to look things up online, how to interact with people. there are a few resources you can direct people to, but honestly, these are things learned outside of school. here is where i agree with ecstatic (way back pages ago) you really need life education from parents/respected elders or even peers. but, i think that that is one of those things that is hard to break out of. there are definite cycles and one of the reason for that is not a lot of life education, though there are a lot of other reasons, too. how un-resourceful people are these days is one of my pet peeves, actually. i know i sited it as a resource but i think one of the major things that gets in the way is the internet. and cell phones. don't even get me started on iphones.

i think a lot of the resources just up the amount we need to know and do to be considered a 'productive' citizen. just look at how job standards have jumped in the last century. a HSD isn't gonna get you anything anymore and BAs are starting to move that way. A lot of jobs require MAs anymore.
i agree with this. but what i meant was resources for the things that cutething mentioned, such as renting stuff, bank stuff, entrepreneurial stuff. i was raised (or not raised ???) to be a very resourceful kid. my mom -->"do your taxes" to little 16 year old hannah. did i have any idea what the heck was going on? no, i went to the library (where i remembered seeing some tax sheets) picked them up, read through what i needed to a did them.
Not quite understanding your objection.
It's not a long enough lesson for it to be in school.
