What DVD are you watching lately?

I have BBC's Persuasion on, but I can't really get into. I've heard thought that BBC's Sense & Sensibility is good. Of course I"ve watched the Ang Lee Emma Thompson version which is superb... I may get it this week to see  :P

e, didn't netflix say we were like 60% movie compatible? sounds about right..  :-*

I don't remember, but I don't think Netflix allows us to be friends anymore - I can't find where you can go and see.  There used to be a Friends tab, but no it's gone.

Yeah, I think they took that feature out a while ago. We can make our own friends tab in our friend world. 100% bff compatible 63% movie compatible 0% pesto compatible

Persuasion from 2007. Good performances, lovely background music. I love the low-keyed acting and the fact that they used actors who look like real people, not like something out of the Perfect Barbie and Ken factory. Only drawback, the shakey camera work at the beginning (really annoying!) and watching Anne Elliot run hell-for-leather down the street in the fashionable part of Bath. No way would a proper young lady have run flat out like that in public!!

Detour, a great old movie

Last night I watched Alive! Is Michael Jackson Really Dead?  ;D The movie pieced together soooooo many miscellaneous things, I left the movie angry. Conspiracy theories are meant to make me question, not angry from confusion, right?

Jacko is now living with Elvis in a gated community in Chile, didn't you know that?  :-D

The 1983 BBC miniseries of Mansfield Park. Why didn't they put felt or something on the soles of the actors' shoes to cut down on the clumping? You can hardly hear the dialogue! Not to mention the cheesy sound effects of "we're in a horse and carriage". I've ridden in a carriage, they don't sound like someone's dragging a bunch of metal along the road behind a car.
Have to say, though, BBC has learned a lot about shooting costume dramas in the past 30 years. Compare this cheesefest (camera angles, liighting, costumes and OMG-the-hair) with Cranford.
There is no comparison.

Yabbit, have you seen the PBS miniseries Downton Abbey? I loved it!

ITV here, PBS there. I found it too slow. Saw part of it though. The servants were too freely-spoken to their employers for 1912.

Total Recall
P pick. I thought it was mainly just funny, and kinda entertaining. I didn't hate it! P loved it, and thinks it's a classic. More gory than I imagined!

Dark Corners
What? This didn't even make sense. It was very weird, with not much going for it, then...ended. I didn't get it.

I was expecting to have to wait a while for my Dexter ssn 5 disc 1, but have that now! I haven't seen Dexter in so long..

I've already seen all of Season 5. Good, but not my favorite. I hope season 6 is better. The previews look crazy!!!!

I've been watching:

Twin Peaks season 2

I've given up on Boardwalk Empire. I want to like it, but it's pretty boring. :(

Now I'm watching True Blood season 1. It has been recommend to me as pure cheesey entertainment. After one episode, I'm not sure I can get past the horrible accents.

We just started the new Dexter - I was hoping I wouldn't have to see Rita this season.

Trueblood is ok - the first season was the best - but now it's more of a porn-fest.  I'm all for boobs and tasteful sexing, but sometimes it gets annoying and becomes distracting.  I'm really over seeing Sookie and Vampire Bill have sex....ok, I get it.

Misery
I wanted to like this a lot, but I found most of it boring and the two main characters pretty annoying. I think Kathy Bates annoys me. I do remember the "hobbling" scene from some other time. I was sad about what happened to my favorite character. I thought this was slow up until the very end. 3/5

Law Abiding Citizen
Very good! Netflix has been recommending this for a long time, and I'm glad we finally watched it. I liked everything about it. Good acting, good story, enough twists but not too convoluted. Goreyish, but not too much. Good movie. 5/5

Dracula 2000
Eh. This was a P pick. I didn't like it that much (would give it a 3), but he said 4. It was just meh, and strangely religious.

Watched disc 1 of Dexter 5.

Misery the movie bears a striking (almost plagairistic) resemblance to a French film starring Stephane Audran (a much earlier film than Misery). In that one, the writer is the woman who finds a girl who's been thrown off her motorcycle on her land, and keeps her locked up in the barn while she "heals"...meanwhile the writer is getting her to tell her life's story so she can write it up and save her floundering career. And wouldn't you know it, I can't find the title of the film. IMDB hates me, and gives me most of the titles in Spanish which is no help at all. I'll have to research this.

Could it be: Mortelle Randonnee 1983
"In this thriller directed by Claude Miller, veteran detective Beauvoir (Michel Serrault) is hot on the trail of Catherine Leiris (Isabelle Adjani), a serial killer. But when Beauvoir begins to suspect that his quarry is actually his long-lost daughter, he switches allegiance and helps protect Catherine from capture by the police."

That's the only one that sounds similar with that actress.

I like this movie a lot too, however I really can't stand the way Gerard Butler talks out of one side of his mouth.  I get so distracted by his weird face.

No, there's no writer and no one being held hostage in that film. I think what we saw was made for TV. I asked on Yahoo! Answers France and so far the only response I got was about a film that Audran isn't even in. I'll find it some day.

He was just weird overall, though..so it fit. Weirdo/weird mouth.

Howl's Moving Castle: Definitely a coming-of-age movie in a strange way. Kind of cute, kind of weird. I'm sure western psychologists would make a lot of hay out of this movie, from the Baba Yaga-type "castle" to the evil mother-figures (Solomon the Sorceress and the Witch of the Waste) to the premature growing-up-and-aging of Sophie. Not to mention that when Sophie confronts Howl in his rooms, they are like tunnels, the walls of which are covered with...toys. Hmmmm. Very Freudian.

Pretty to look at, yes. What struck me was the layers of the film; how the rest of the two kingdoms go merrily on and ignore what's happening all around. No one seems to notice people doing weird things. Even Sophie's mother is completely wrapped up in her own life and unaware of the importance of her own actions. (Yet another immature parent!) And again, no father, though it is mentioned that he died before the action started. The sister, Letty (?) makes a brief appearance at the beginning and then she's never seen again.

It was an OK way to kill a little time, but I won't be watching it again. I guess he really said what he had to say in Totoro.

SB got me watching Twin Peaks.  I had seen a few episodes yrs ago, but I'm starting from the beginning now and love it.
